Singaporean woman nabbed in Malaysian baby-for-sale syndicate

KLANG (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Two babies, aged 22 days and three months respectively, were saved from a baby-for-sale syndicate at a popular shopping mall on Friday.

Malaysian police also arrested four women, including a 37-year-old Singaporean believed to be the middleman for the baby-for-sale activity.

South Klang OCPD Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Mat Yusop said police surveillance led them to a cafe at the mall, where the Singaporean was spotted with three other local women.

'Many photos of babies were found on the Singaporean's mobile phone, more than 10. And there were messages indicating transactions took place,' he said.

Malaysian police are investigating a baby-for-sale syndicate involving a Singaporean, reported The Star newspaper on Friday.

Four women were arrested, one of whom is a 37-year-old Singaporean believed to be facilitating the sale at a mall in Klang.

Authorities also rescued two babies who were meant to be sold.

According to the news report, the police said more than ten photos of babies were found in the Singaporean’s mobile phone.

There were also text messages indicating that transactions had taken place.

Police believe the babies were not kidnapped but sold to middleman by their parents.

The babies - one as young as three weeks old - have been handed to the welfare department after a medical check-up at a hospital.

This is not the first time Malaysian police have come across such a case. Quite a number of arrests have been made over the years in relation to syndicates selling babies.

In 2009, five babies were rescued and 13 people were arrested for their roles in a baby-selling racket. They were selling each baby for around S$6,000 to S$8,000.
