Since you have never joined the PAP, why are you supporting them?

Since you have never been part of WP, why are you always criticizing them?

Scum.

I said you have to know what you're talking about. I didn't say you have to a member of the organisation you're judging.

You really are a twit of the highest order.

Damned right they don't. People who comment from the sidelines are the worst scum of all.

It you're going to judge something, you first have to know what you're talking about.

I drink coffee at the kopitiam every day ...commenting of events is the norm. Don't need to be an expert to offer two-cents worth on current issues and politics.

This is what Laksaboy said you agreed with:

"By your silly logic, no movie reviewer has the right to say a movie is poor, as they have not personally directed or produced a movie."

There you have it. You have to make a movie to say a movie is poor, that is akin to being a politician to say a politician is poor.

When it comes to unravelling contradictions, nobody can beat me. I'm a disciple of the great Perry Mason.

You're thoroughly inconsistent. First you assert that people from the sidelines should not comment, even to the point of suggesting that movie goers should not criticize movies they had no hand in producing. Then now you backtrack. I agree with tanwahp on this.

Smart politicians should ignore them.

Taking them to court will only make them more famous and increase their followers number.

He will be taken care when international organizations step in to champion his case.

End of the day, he will be convicted. International organsiations championing his case may exacerbate matters.

I think he is prepared to be incarcerated. I will be surprised if they locked him up for more than a few months. If they put him away for years, you can bet thta sinkapore will be in the limelight. And I don't think LHL wants sinkapore to be in bad light so much.

When he drew those cartoons, he knew what he was getting into. Thankful that there are still gutsy people around. Challenging the establishment is not for the faint hearted.

Yeah whoever paid and watched the movie have the right to comment on the movie. Same logic applies for restaurant meals, clothes, and of course government policies. No need to know how to make movie, cook like restaurant chef, know sewing of clothes or be a politician in order to have the right to comment on the movie, food, clothes and govt policies.

leslie-chew-cartoon-large.jpg
(Reuters, 26 Jul) – Singapore government lawyers have
started legal proceedings that could result in a political cartoonist serving a
jail term, in another sign that the long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) is
becoming increasingly intolerant of opponents, critics said.

Chew Peng Ee, known to followers of his “Demon-cratic Singapore” site on Facebook as
Leslie Chew, had committed contempt of court “by scandalising the judiciary of
the Republic of Singapore”, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said in a statement
on Thursday.

The charges stemmed from four cartoons that Chew had published in 2011 and
2012, three of which were about the perceived unfairness of the courts when
imposing punishment. His case will be heard on Aug. 12.

Chew has already been investigated for sedition for alleging official
discrimination against Singapore’s ethnic Malay minority and is out on police
bail, his lawyer said.

There are no prescribed penalties for contempt of court in Singapore and the
judge could issue a warning or fine instead of a jail sentence. For sedition, a
person could be fined up to S$5,000 ($3,900) or jailed up to three years, or
both.

Prosperous, multi-racial Singapore, a key U.S. ally, has long taken a tough
stand against criticism of the government. Leaders have taken legal action
against critics, saying they needed to protect their reputations.

The most recent case of a critic being jailed took place in 2011 when Alan
Shadrake, a British writer, was sentenced to six weeks in prison for contempt of
court and scandalising the judiciary with a book about the death penalty in
Singapore.

Government spokesmen were not immediately available for comment on the case
of the cartoonist.

1000 steps backward into the stone age.
I don’t understand why our
government is so insecure. A professional cartoonist makes a living by satire,
c’mon, give the guy a break. Satire is a form of opinion. It is just an opinion
of the cartoonist. Why are people fined and possibly jailed for expressing an
opinion, which subsequently, does not result in social turmoil and upheaval==
there has not been an iota of evidence that his cartoons had changed society’s
view (it mght even have already coincided with his view even before the cartoons
came out!!)?

I just don’t understand it. The truth prevails. People will judge and decide
whether the opinion is fact or fiction.

The PAP reaction, is really ridiculous and childish, considering that
Singapore is supposed to have achieved 1st world status and people are more
sophisticated and make their own judgements.

In my opinion, Leslie is a genius, a true and rare Singapore Talent who
should be immortalised, cherished and honoured for his outstanding creativity.
Just read his cartoons and judge for yourself.
Where else do you get such
quick wits and intelligent analytical mind. Here you have a real local talent
and yet, he is being thrown to the dungeons.

Actually I have combed through all leslie’s cartoons. They are all very good
clean fun. They are just normal political satire found in any mature political
system in the world. Most people just laugh it off and don’t give a damn. Life
goes on, we are all singpareons, we are not going to riot just by reading
leslie’s cartoons!!!!

The only, yes the ONLY cartoon I found rather off-limits, was the one he
implicated that LHL’s wife got power through MARRYTOCRACY. This is more like a
direct personal attack, not a political satire. It’s not a good cartoon because
it gets very personal, and can be seen as defamatory. But having said that, we
have to look at the rather limited reach and circulation of his cartoons, the
defamatory impact is rather small and I am sure leslie could apologise for that
specific cartoon, and he should be let off and continue to be allowed to earn a
living through his funny satires.

No one is hurt, how can the govt cause so much trouble to this cartoonist.
PLEASE RELEASE HIM LET HIM GO.
