I opine it is more acceptable if PSC was aware of his past and yet decided to grant him the scholarship. No one is perfect and deserves a second chance. Take Tharman for example. Whatever said, he was convicted in court for OSA and coz he is deserving, he rose to where he is today.

This is not to say that PSC has never failed. Indeed they have - many times, but just not in this instance. Remember the teaching scholar from years ago who posted racist comments on his blog? That guy was selected by PSC, not MOE. Then about 10 years ago, a President's scholar, no less, was stripped of his scholarship because of his overzealous alcoholism and bad grades during university. Honestly, how many of us can claim we never 'churi' from our school canteen or bookshop? It is whether we were or weren't caught. If caught, was it handed over to the police for court action? So, we do have many such 'not caught criminals' among us.

My thinking is - although it's hard to hire teachers per se, for teaching SCHOLARSHIPS there are tons of teenagers dying to sign a bond so that they can see the world for 4 years and then realise it's really no big deal once you've been there. If they knew about the peeping incident, they could well have picked the next guy who is equally qualified but without this blemish on his record. They have tons of qualified scholarship applicants to choose from and there's no reason to take a risk, even a small one. Not least to cover your butt by preventing bad publicity like this from happening.

I have a feeling that it is more a case of Chinese High not disclosing the info, for whatever reason. Most probably also want a 'clean' Chinese High kind of reputation, and was hoping that it was a one-off offence.

On the other hand, reports that are coming out seem to show that this guy is quite brilliant - especially in the humanities. So, since everyone is going on about the humanities and building a future liberal arts college kind of atmosphere, maybe MOE knew but thought it was a one-off thing.

As for the Thaman incident, it was such a minor offence - releasing some economic estimates too early -- It was such an idiotic and minor offence that at that time everyone thought it was probably some jealous person who tried to dock him in. Agree, more likely as you stated. If so, whoever in Chinese High deserve to be investigated for intentionally concealing information. Pretty sure PSC/MOE wants to know the strengths and limitations of its interviewees. The non-disclosure could have been intended so as to protect the brand name of the school.

调查后，校方追查到猥亵录音就来自被告，立即报警，被告是在今年3月19日被捕。
