Shop blaze: Man charged

AN UNEMPLOYED man was charged on Thursday with two counts of mischief by fire and trying to torch a provision shop in Bukit Batok. Alex Wong Kia Soon, 30, is said to have set fire to the shop at the void deck of Block 336 Bukit Batok Street 33 between Sept 22 and 23 as well as on Oct 5. He allegedly tried to set fire to the premises between Oct 3 and 4. Bail of $15,000 was offered. The case was adjourned to Nov 15 for a pre-trial conference. If convicted of mischief by fire, he can be jailed for up to seven years and fined; and for attempted mischief by fire, up to 3 1/2 years and a fine.
