A 24-YEAR-OLD man believed to be responsible for a series of armed robberies in the western parts of Singapore was arrested on Thursday. In the latest offence, the suspect had confronted a 30-year-old woman at knife-point inside a lift at Block 257 Jurong East Street 24 at about 6.40pm, but could not get anything of value from the victim, and fled when the lift opened on the third floor. The victim, who was unhurt, immediately reported the case to the police. Less than an hour later, another case of armed robbery was reported at Block 129 Bukit Batok West Ave 6 at about 7.30 pm. Based on the description provided by the earlier victim, police managed to track the man down and arrested him along Bukit Batok West Ave 8 at 7.35pm. Further investigations revealed that the man is also believed to have been involved in several other similar cases of armed robbery in the Bukit Batok, Jurong East and Choa Chu Kang housing estates. The suspect will be charged in court on Friday for armed robbery, and faces a minimum jail term of three years and 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted.
