Serial conman arrested

A SERIAL conman who preyed on at least six elderly victims has been caught. Police from Clementi division picked up the 61-year-old man in Woodlands Street 13 on Thursday morning.

In all the cases reported, the suspect would approach elderly persons at their HDB flats, saying he was a neighbour living in the same block. He would then claim that his daughter was injured and ask the victims to lend him money for his daughter's medical expenses.

After the victims handed him the cash, he would give them fictitious particulars and promise to repay them. They never saw him again. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in at least six such cheating cases.

The man will be charged in court on Friday, and faces jail of up to 10 years and a fine, if convicted. Police advise members of the public to be wary of strangers and to call for the police if they sense something amiss.

SINGAPORE: A serial cheat who deceived twelve people into giving him cash totalling S$800 was on Friday sentenced to four weeks' jail.

But because he has been in remand since November, last year, 61-year-old Andrew Yapp will be released on Friday evening.

The unemployed man visited his victims at their flats at places including Woodlands, Serangoon North as well as Bukit Batok between 16 July 2009 and 23 November, last year.

Yapp lied to his victims claiming that he was one of their neighbours from the same block of flats before telling them that he needed to borrow their money to supposedly pay his daughter's medical expenses.

He also claimed that he had no one else to turn to.

His victims would then fork out between S$10 and S$100 each after he promised that he would repay the loans.

The court on Friday heard that Yapp, who is married with no children, had no intention to return the money.

Yapp pleaded guilty on Friday to five charges while eight remaining ones were taken into consideration.

For cheating, he could have been jailed for up to ten years and fined for each charge.
