What would be a better timing? Wait for the burning to die out? That will take a very long time, maybe more than a year. Some voters might get impatient. So holding it very early, delivering a tactical surprise on the Opposition
is a smart, calculated move. The issue of AIM may not have the time to fully develop. The investigation will take at least one to two months and that is after the election.
The effects of this move have already been felt. The PAP has already given quite a bit of exposure of its candidate while the Opposition parties are still deciding whether to contest. If I may say, only WP seems to be ready. As the incumbent opposition, they have decided very early on to contest. SDP seems ready to throw in the towel, otherwise why demand a negotiation at this late stage. Don't think they are ready in terms of funding and logistics.

I still think that better ones within SDP will guide the less than sensible ones. This is not about principles or the right to contest, it is also about the impact from voters and the general populace if the contest occurs. We have to bear in mind that SDP poll badly over many GEs until the last one. Despite all the noise, even smaller parties and lesser known opposition identities outdid SDP.
If they contest, there is no doubt that they will trail behind WP. How badly they perform will depend on candidates that are offered by both parties.

If WP were to issue sucvh a statement, there is no harm done to its image but more of a bonus. But to SDP, its a sign that SDP had"looked down" on both RP and SDA, hence showing no respect and not sincere at all with opposition unity.
Imagine what sort of PR nightmare that would be.
All SDP has to do in reply that they apologise for the oversight and would gladly participate with RP and SDA.

If the internal polling which had been carried out had reflected that the WP would win in a one-to-one fight, the Dauphin would not be calling for a BE. PE will remain with the PAP.

Why does SDP declare that it wants to stand for election and send a letter of invite for a negotiation meeting?
It could be for one of the following reasons:
1) It originally wanted to contest but after walking the ground found that the ground was not too sweet and decided to negotiate for share of territory in future contests before throwing in the towel
2) It originally wanted to contest but the sudden announcement of the BE caught them by surprise and they are not ready to contest. So same as in 1) try to negotiate something before throwing in the towel
3) Originally, had no intention to contest but make use of this for posturing to negotiate a deal with WP for future contests, therefore RP, SPP, SDA, NS not invited because they are actually not concerned with the MCF issue
4) Originally wanted to contest and will actually join in the contest but use the letter of invitation to deflect possible blame that they are the spoiler.

Perhaps your hypothesis is true, that the minority vote was lost to the WP , than again perhaps it's not but the easiest way to prove it one way or the other is a straight one on one fight whereby the district polling will tell the story,
Perhaps the SDP is the best bet, with its smart policies, eloquent speakers and combative stance , but then again with its zero ground work, in PE , if its theory was correct, it would have MPs in parliament would it not ?

if its a three cornered fight so be it, The PAP wins, The WP loses but is encouraged to come back again if PE is still in existence in 2016 which I do not, The SDP behind by the WP by at least eight percent or more , I hope learns the lesson of concentrated work , door to door house visits and starts thinking seriously whether it wants to pander only the twenty percent or does what is politically necessary for the 50.1.
