Background story
Overseas accidents involving SAF personnel
THE accident in Idaho was not the first involving off-duty Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel based overseas. A few others died or were injured in previous cases.
December 2009: Army Master Sergeant Lim Chin Hou, 34, went into a coma after being hit by a van and then a tour bus while crossing a street in Taiwan. He was there to support a military training exercise.
November 2009: A car with three
Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) servicemen rammed into the back of a stationary truck in the United States. They were on their way back to their base at the US Army Aviation Centre in Fort Rucker, Alabama, after visiting the National Naval Aviation Museum in Florida. Lieutenant Alan Chee Zhi Hao, 21, died, while his fellow helicopter pilot trainees Lim Jun Kai, 23, and Ingkiriwang Wei Zhi Reeve, 22, were injured.
December 2007: Three off-duty RSAF airmen were involved in a head-on collision with another car in the US state of Arizona. The accident also claimed the life of an elderly woman who was in the other car. One of the RSAF men was injured, while the other two escaped injury. The Ministry of Defence did not disclose the identities of the servicemen at the time.
The family had been headed for Mountain Home Air Force Base, where the RSAF's F-15SG fighter detachment is stationed. Mr Lim, then off-duty, is part of the 428th Fighter Squadron based there, although The Straits Times understands he is not a pilot.
