SINGAPORE: A repeat offender on a work-release programme was on Thursday sentenced to seven years' corrective training.

Eric Heng Jit Siang, 37, was convicted of stealing cash and laptops, among other things, amounting to more than $5,000, in January this year.

A month later, he stole gold bars and gold chains worth more than $10,000 from a retail shop.

At the time of the offences, Heng was placed on a work release programme from August 2012 to April 2013.

Under the programme, Heng started work at a courier company but ended up committing criminal breach of trust just four months into his job.

In December, he misappropriated 162 iPhones worth more than $162,000.

Heng also drove without a valid licence and a valid vehicle insurance policy between December last year and March this year.

In February this year, he was also caught using a false licence plate.

For these offences, the judge sentenced him to seven years' corrective training and banned him from driving for one year.
