Repeat offender jailed for loanshark harassment

A man who helped a loanshark harass debtors was jailed for 60 months and ordered to be given 24 strokes of the cane on Friday.
Tan Jit Thiam, 37, faced enhanced punishment under the Moneylenders Act as he had been convicted of similar offences in 2009 for which he was sentenced to a total of seven months' jail and four strokes of the cane.
The shop supervisor pleaded guilty to five counts of helping an unlicensed moneylender known as Alex to cause annoyance to house occupants in various locations by splashing red paint on the main doors of units and scribbling loanshark graffiti on the walls of staircase landings between late November and early December.
He had committed the offences with his colleague, Yadav Rana Pratap, 22, an intern, whose case is pending.
