A PART-TIME relief taxi driver was fined a total of $9,000 and banned from driving for five years on Monday for causing the death of his front-seat passenger and injuring another.

Ong Poh Hin, 47, then a sales supervisor, had admitted to causing the death of Mr Liu Kuiyi, 29, and injuring Mr Wang Xin, 27, by committing an act so negligent as to endanger life, along Pan-Island Expressway on Oct 2 last year.

He was travelling behind a trailer at about 3.30am when he failed to keep a proper look-out and hit the back of the trailer loaded with cement support beams.

Mr Liu, a Chinese national, died nine days later of head injuries.

Ong, who was working by day and a part-time driver at night, was injured. Mr Wang had nasal bone fractures, right elbow contusion and a stable head injury.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death through his negligence. The other offence is punishable with up to six months or $2,500 fine or jail and fine.
