SINGAPORE: A 19-year-old youth who was wanted by a Reformative Training Centre, threatened to kill a police officer when he was caught. For this and other offences, he was sentenced to six years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane.

Kevin Woo Ming Yang, who is unemployed, faces six charges in all but one of them was taken into consideration. Woo was arrested on 20 December last year.

Police officers had screened his identity card at Circular Road in the Boat Quay area and found that he was wanted by a Reformative Training Centre where he was sent for rehabilitation. The court heard that he put up a violent struggle and resisted arrest.

After officers successfully put him in the back of a police car, Woo was heard telling them that he was a member of a secret society. He also challenged one of the officers, 37-year-old Senior Staff Sergeant Soh Chiea Hee to a fight.

Woo was also found guilty of two counts of armed robbery. He approached two teenage boys near Block 60 Marine Drive on 11 June last year and told them to hand over their valuables.

When the pair hesitated, Woo asked his alleged accomplice to show them a knife he was carrying inside a bag. Woo told the boys that they would suffer if his demands were not met.

The two victims did as they were told and handed over more than $1,000 worth of valuables including two mobile phones and a hand-held computer game console. - CNA/jm

A recalcitrant youth offender was sentenced to six years' jail and given the maximum 24 strokes of the cane for committing several offences, including threatening to kill a police officer.

Kevin Woo Ming Yang (picture), 19, was arrested on Dec 20 last year after officers checked his identity card in the Boat Quay area and found that he was wanted by a Reformative Training Centre.

Woo put up a struggle and challenged one of the officers to a fight. He also threatened to kill one of them upon his release.

The unemployed youth was also convicted of two counts of armed robbery in Marine Parade in June last year.
