New York police arrest Ray Lengend, accused of throwing incendiary devices at an Islamic cultural center and four other New York-area sites on New Year's Day.

New York police have arrested 40 year old Ray Lengend in connection with five firebombings on New Year's Day, including one on the Al-Khoei Center center as about 80 people were gathered inside. No one was hurt, but the victims all appeared to be ethnic or religious minorities and there was concern that they'd been specifically marked.

Police say Lengend has implicated himself in the firebombing attacks, according to the New York Times (paywall). While victims wondered why they'd been targeted, the report says the suspect may have acted out of revenge. The first site hit on New Year's Day was a corner convenience store, owned by an immigrant from Yemen. The owner says a few days earlier, he'd stopped Lengend from shoplifting.

The next attack was against the Al-Khoei Foundation, an Islamic cultural center, where dozens of people were meeting inside. Several reports, including by AP, say Lengend was reportedly infuriated because he had once been denied the chance to use the bathroom there.

A private home that suffered severe firebomb damage was apparently struck by mistake, according to Newsday. The suspect allegedly was angry at a drug dealer and wanted to retaliate: he got the street right but apparently got the house wrong when throwing the firebomb.

Another private home that doubles as a Hindu temple was hit later that night because the suspect allegedly had a years-old disagreement with someone he thought was inside, says CBS. And a third home, owned by an Indian family, was targeted because the suspect reportedly had argued with them.

Lengend, who's jailed, will receive psychiatric tests. He faces several charges, including arson and a count of arson as a hate crime. The Times says the hate crime charge was added because the suspect made several anti-Muslim statements after he was arrested and may have attempted a broader attack against the Islamic center.

N.Y. man faces hate crime, arson counts in firebomb attacks

A New York man who allegedly chose New Year's Day to take revenge on his perceived enemies was charged Wednesday with a hate crime and four counts of arson stemming from a recent spate of firebombings.

The suspect was identified as Ray Lazier Lengend, who's believed to have hand-crafted Molotov cocktails using glass Starbucks Frappuccino bottles and a beer bottle. He then allegedly used the homemade weapons to get back at others for what he considered slights and insults.

Lengend reportedly cooperated with police and confessed to the attacks, including a couple of which police were unaware. The targets included two homes in Queens; a home in Nassau County; a convenience store; and a New York City Islamic center, the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation, according to the Associated Press. There were more than 80 worshipers inside the latter at the time.

No injuries were reported, but the two-hour rampage left city residents frightened and shaken on a day that was supposed to be set aside for spiritual and emotional renewal. Once a suspect was caught, anger erupted along with demands that the culprit face hate crime charges for the attack on the center.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg promised the city that there would be no tolerance for discrimination.

Now, law enforcement officials are trying to piece together not just the string of attacks, but also a motive. The New York Times reports that investigators believe Lengend was trying to settle scores against those he believed had wronged him. The center, for example, was deemed to have mistreated Lengend when he asked to use its bathroom. The convenience store owner allegedly tossed Lengend out after he was caught shoplifting.

The New York Times also reports that Lengend has been arrested several times in the past, including on drug possession charges, grand larceny and possession of bad checks.

In at least one of the weekend attacks, authorities say, the suspect completely missed his target: A homemade bomb was tossed at a home that Legend believed belonged to a drug dealer who had cheated him. He allegedly had the right street for the dealer, but the wrong address, according to the Associated Press, which added that Lengend ultimately did not know the residents inside the house that he allegedly set on fire.

In all, Lengend faces one count of arson as a hate crime, four counts of arson and five counts of criminal possession of a weapon, police told the Associated Press. Additional charges are possible.

US suspect 'confesses' firebomb attacks

New York City police say a man has confessed to a string of arson attacks at an Islamic cultural centre and four other sites on New Year's Day.

The man was taken into custody on Tuesday.

His name was not immediately released.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said he made statements implicating himself in the attacks and had personal grievances with each targeted location.

Crude Molotov cocktails were tossed into a convenience store, two homes in Queens, one in nearby Nassau County, and an Islamic centre.

He is facing arson-related charges.
