NEW DELHI: A gang of 11 men, comprising a BCom graduate from St Xavier College in Kolkata, two Delhi University graduates and seven Nigerians, has been arrested in connection with a series of email and net banking frauds.


The cyber crooks, who are estimated to have cheated people of several crores, duped people in two ways. They would empty their targets' accounts using a combination of hacking and SIM card deactivation as well as send out emails, 1,000 at a time and text messages congratulating people on having won astronomic sums which is a common phishing technique. In their last bid, the gang stole Rs 19.31 lakh from the salary account of the country head of a Geneva-based organization.

A CBI Special Court here on Friday sentenced M.Gopalakrishnan, former Indian Bank Chairman and Managing Director, and six former senior executives of the Bank to one year rigorous imprisonment in a bank fraud case registered in 1997.

This was the third instance of conviction for Gopalakrishnan, who was sentenced to undergo 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) by the special CBI court in 2009 and one-year RI in another case last May.

At present, he is out on bail pending appeal. He is still facing trial in dozen other cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation in mid-1990s.

In the latest case, the court also handed out similar punishment to M. Varadharajulu, a businessman, and seven others of a private company for causing a loss of Rs.31.75 crore to the bank.

The trial of the present case commenced in 2004 as the some of accused filed appeal in upper courts and Varadharajulu, one of the accused, had been absconding for many years

Hyderabad, Jan 12: The CBI investigating the Emaar scam has got unassailable evidence to crucify Koneru Prasad (now in jail), owner of the Stylish Homes company that is alleged to have swindled the money due to the government corporation APIIC.

According to information, Tummala Ranga Rao who was director cum Marketing Manager of Stylish Homes and an accused in the case, has turned approver and told the CBI that he himself had deposited Rs. 128 crores Koneru Prasad had swindled, in his and his sons’ accounts in Dubai.

Emaar Properties of Dubai has entered into an agreement with the AP industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) for developing more than 500 acres of land in the Manikonda area of Hyderabad into villas, apartments, a golf course, convention center, star hotel etc.

It is a matter of shame that retired air hostesses and some other officers have not been paid their pension and other legitimate dues, compelling them to seek redress in court. It is even more shameful that the Maharaja, in utter humiliation, has had to plead insolvency. The court has ordered payment in about three months.

I would not be surprised if further default leads to attachment of the aircraft and office furniture. As on March 2011, Air India has accumulated a debt of Rs 42,570 cr (approximately $10 billion) and an operating loss of Rs 22,000 cr, and is seeking Rs 42,920 cr from the government. Salary payments and interest payments are being defaulted.
