SINGAPORE: A 28-year-old man who robbed a 20-year-old female victim at knife-point along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 was disarmed and detained by three public-spirited citizens.

On 13 June 2013 at about 9.50 pm, the victim was walking along the pavement when the suspect approached her to ask for directions.

While the victim was browsing her handphone to show him the directions, the suspect attempted to grab the phone from her.

A struggle ensued and the suspect brandished a knife to threaten the victim to let go of her handphone.

The victim's shouts and cries for assistance attracted the attention of three passers-by, who immediately came forward and helped to detain the suspect.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrived at scene shortly after and placed the suspect under arrest.

The victim sustained injuries to her arm and was conveyed to hospital for outpatient treatment.

A fruit knife was also found in the suspect's possession and seized as case exhibit.

Preliminary investigations also revealed that the suspect could be involved in another similar case of armed robbery that occurred on the same day around Nanyang Crescent.

A handphone believed to have been taken by the suspect during the robbery was recovered.

The suspect will be charged in court on Saturday with armed robbery.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of five to 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Three motorcyclists nabbed a man who attacked a 20-year-old woman with a fruit knife while trying to steal her handphone at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 on Thursday, June 13, at about 9.50pm.

A Stomp contributor who witnessed the incident said the woman was slashed on her left arm, chest and left thigh, and was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

According to the contributor, the man was subsequently arrested by the Police. He said, "This incident occurred yesterday on June 13 between 9pm to 10pm, at a traffic junction between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9.

"Armed with a fruit knife, this man alighted from his motorbike and approached a young woman on the pretext of asking for directions.

"The 20-year-old woman, not sensing anything amiss, took out her handphone and searched for directions on the phone.

"The man suddenly snatched her phone but she managed to snatch it back from him.

"During the struggle, he whipped out the knife and slashed her on her left arm, chest and left thigh.

"Thankfully three public spirited motorcyclists saw the commotion and managed to prevent the culprit from escaping.

"When the victim's relatives arrived, the woman was already bandaged and was about to leave for KTPH in an ambulance.

"In a hurry, they only managed to thank one of the motorcyclists - Mr Iqbal and his wife, a nurse - for their public spiritedness.

"Their thanks also go to the first gentleman who assisted in apprehending the culprit as well as the other couple who helped to direct traffic during the commotion."

In a statement to the media, the police said that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect could be involved in another similar case of armed robbery that occurred on the same day near Nanyang Crescent.

The suspect will be charged in court on June 15, 2013 for the offence of Armed Robbery with Hurt under Section 394 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.

If convicted, he faces a prison term of 5 to 20 years. He shall also be punished with no less than 12 strokes of the cane.
