Police raid shophouse used as gambling den, 9 arrested

SINGAPORE : Police arrested nine people during a raid on Thursday night on a shophouse in Joo Chiat Road that was used as a gambling den.
Eight of the suspects are men and one is a woman and they are aged between 29 and 65.
Police said early investigations found that a 57-year-old male suspect had rented the shophouse for gambling, and believe the remaining suspects are patrons.
Nineteen modified computers and cash of S$625 were seized.
The 57-year-old suspect and one other suspect will be charged in court on Monday.
Investigations against the remaining suspects are ongoing.
Anyone convicted of managing a place to be used as a common gaming house can be fined between S$5,000 and S$50,000, and jailed up to three years.
Gamblers can be fined up to S$5,000 or jailed up to six months, or both.
