Police nab 26-year-old hit-and-run driver

By Linette Lin

POLICE have arrested a 26-year-old man believed to be involved in a hit-and-run accident along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 towards Yio Chu Kang Road last Thursday (the first day of Chinese New Year).

A 33-year-old Chinese man was hit by a car as he was crossing the road at about 11.15pm. After hitting the pedestrian, the driver did not stop, and fled the scene. The man sustained head and abdominal injuries and was brought to the hospital by ambulance.

Police found a piece of broken bumper, fragments of a broken front lamp and undercarriage cover at the scene. Based on the evidence, Traffic Police mounted an islandwide operation to hunt down the hit-and-run driver.

A car with a damaged bumper consistent with the evidence was spotted in a carpark in the vicinity of Bedok North Avenue 3. Thorough follow-up investigations on the ownership of the car, led the police to arrest the suspect at about 4pm on Monday.

Motorists involved in an accident should never leave the accident scene and must render necessary assistance such as calling for an ambulance to attend to the injured party.

Failure to do so is an offence and the offender is liable to a fine not exceeding $3,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months and in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.
