Taipei, Jan. 7 (CNA) Police in the Philippines have arrested a suspected smuggler bringing illegal drugs from China to the Philippines with the help of Taiwan, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) in Taipei said Wednesday.
Acting on the intelligence provided by Taiwan, a Philippine anti-drug police squad discovered around 40 kilograms of amphetamine in four water pumps during X-ray checks on "special cargo" and arrested a Philippine national trying to take delivery of devices, the CIB said in a press release.
The bureau did not give the specific date of the arrest, saying only that it happened "recently." It said the market value of the drugs was estimated at around 200 million Philippine peso (US$4.44 million).
The CIB learned about the Taiwan-based drug smuggling ring in September 2014 after receiving tips from informants.
The ring operates by hiding illicit drugs in mechanic devices and having them shipped to the Philippines via express delivery.
The CIB touted the arrest as a testimony to the importance of bilateral cooperation on crime fighting through an information-sharing and coordination platform between the two countries.
