SINGAPORE: A 26-year-old assistant electrical engineer has pleaded guilty to pushing a policeman down a flight a stairs as the officer was about to apprehend him.

Lau Chin Seng, a Singapore Permanent Resident, pushed Corporal Muhammad Jailani Abdul Kader at Block 456, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at around 1pm on February 8.

As a result, the officer hurt his lower back and right forearm.

The court heard that Corporal Muhammad Jailani was patrolling the estate that day with one of his colleagues, Corporal Mohammad Husaini Mohammad Yusoff, 23, when they spotted Lau loitering suspiciously along a corridor on the fourth floor of the block of flats.

The officer went forward and flashed Lau his warrant card as he wanted to check his particulars.

But Lau immediately ran away when he saw it as he had a packet of contraband cigarettes on him.

The two policemen ran after him and Corporal Muhammad Jailani grabbed his right arm at a flight of stairs.

Lau retaliated by pushing the 26 year old in the chest, causing him to lose his balance and roll down the steps.

However, the other police officer managed to catch up with Lau and placed him under arrest.

Lau, who is now out on a S$5,000 bail, will be sentenced next Monday.

He could be jailed up to three months, fined a maximum of S$2,500 or both.

A MAN with a packet of contraband cigarettes pushed a cop causing him to fall and roll down a flight of stairs, a district court heard. Lau Chin Seng, 26, an assistant electrical engineer, was jailed for a week on Monday after admitting to obstructing corporal Muhammad Jailani Abdul Kader, 26, at Block 456 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 on Feb 8.

The officer and his colleague were patrolling in the vicinity when they saw Lau loitering suspiciously along the corridor on the fourth floor. They checked on him. After identifying themselves, Lau immediately ran away. While running down a flight of stairs, the victim managed to grab hold of Lau's right arm to apprehend him. But Lau turned around and pushed Cpl Jailani on the chest, which caused him to lose his balance, fall and roll down a flight of stairs.

The other officer managed to detain Lau. Chief District Judge Tan Siong Thye agreed with Deputy Public Prosecutor Stella Tan that there were aggravating factors in this case. He felt that Lau's act was very dangerous as the victim could have suffered serious injuries when he rolled down the concrete stairs, but fortuitously, he had only minor injuries. Lau could have been jailed for up to three months and/or fined up to $2,500.
