Fukushima 50 - lessons in worker loyalty

THE extraordinary courage of the Fukushima 50 - the Japanese engineers and technicians battling to contain the nuclear fallout from reactors damaged in the earthquake and tsunami - offers lessons to Singaporeans.

One important factor behind the dedication of these workers is Japan's collectivistic corporate culture that values loyalty and ensures long-term employment security. This is in contrast to the American model, which is characterised by individualism and short-term profitability.

These values are reflected in the salaries of senior executives: CEOs in Japan are rewarded far less than their counterparts in the United States and Europe.

While the Japanese corporate culture has often been criticised for breeding conservatism and inertia, and for rewarding riskaverse senior management, it has also fostered an exceptional sense of team spirit and commitment that transcends short-term gains. This sense of esprit de corps is evident among the Fukushima 50 workers, and it is through them that the best of Japan Inc is being shown in these harrowing times.

Singapore Inc has been moving towards the US model with its emphasis on rewarding 'top talent' generously. Over the years, we have been seeing increasingly disproportionate levels of remuneration for senior executives in contrast to workers down the line who have to face the prospects of redundancy and wage reduction in tough times.

Also, given the ease of replacing local staff with foreign labour, Singapore Inc risks being turned into a mercenary, alien and transient space peopled by workers with little sense of belonging, loyalty and commitment that is found in the Japanese worker.

That was on my mind too. Lee Hsien Loong and cronies forgot that Japanese belong to a very closely knitted society. They don't believe in importing foreign trash and they kept their society largely Japanese with a sense of belongings and strong culture. Thus, when catastrophe happened in their country, naturally the bond will follow.
On the other hand, Singapore is a rojak country. Foriegn trash are abundant, PAP is a clueless party and NS men felt their loyalty being betrayed. An island of rojak with very expensive government whose words are louder than action. Will Singaporeans have similar calmness as Japanese? Only PAP will know but they will not stop blaming Singaporeans for all the flawed and cruel policies.

If SG has 120 million citizens, maybe you can afford to be like Japan.

However, there is no critical mass of talent in SG. The best are either doctors/lawyers/top civil servants.

Hence you need FT to fill in the gaps in the private sector to ensure that these companies want to stay in SG.

It's sad but FTs are hired by big companies and also SME in the private sector. Just face facts. PAP don't force companies to hire the FTs. They listen to the needs of the companies and that's why the gates are opened.

If something of this scale happen in Singapore, we will wait for PAP's instructions and login to sammyboy to kpkb. Don't worry, there will be no looting or riotting by Singaporeans, FT I don't know. Most likely all will flee.

FT come here to work and earn money not to risk their life here.
If oil and gass company/shipyard on fire . Then you have to depend on local NSmen/civil defend.
FT will run as far as they can will not stay to help to put out fire.
