TWO snatch thieves who grabbed about $25,000 in cash from their victim on Monday did not get away with their loot - thanks to two public-spirited passers-by. The victim, 45, an employee of a shop in Chander Road, had collected his shop's takings and was making his way to a nearby bank to deposit the money, when a 28-year-old suspect came from behind him and snatched his bag at a traffic light junction in front of Peace Centre. Two passers-by - 41-year-old Chinese National, Cui Yue Jin, who was on his way to buy lunch in the vicinity and Nicholas Wong, a final-year Polytechnic student - on hearing victim's cries for help, came to his rescue and gave chase immediately.
During the chase, the suspect dropped the bag of money, and tried to flee by climbing over a fence and into the Princep Street Presbytarian Church. Mr Wong followed suit while Mr Cui went back to retrieve the bag of money. Mr Wong managed to nab the suspect inside the church compound - with help from two cleaners - and they handed the thief over to the police who arrived shortly. The other suspect got away. Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Koh Yak Leng on Tuesday commended the pair for their bravery and public spiritedness. If convicted, the suspects could be jailed for up to seven years and caned.
