Slasher Hamzah Hamid, 22 gets jail and caning

A MAN who slashed two young students whom he thought were rival gang members was jailed for four years and ordered to be given 12 strokes of the cane on Friday.
Hamzah Hamid, 22, then an air-conditioning repairman, pleaded guilty earlier in September to two charges of grievous hurt at the void deck of Block 474 Tampines Street 44 on March 17.
The court heard that while Mr Mohamed Nur Faiz Mohamamad Hafidz, 17, and Mr Muhammad Nuh Firsha M. Zaid, 18, together with two others, were about to leave the void deck that night, Hamzah asked which secret society they were from.
When they said they were not members of any gang, Hamzah whipped out a knife from his jacket and slashed Mr Faiz on his face, leaving him with a permanent scar.
He also slashed Mr Firsha, who used his hands to block the attack. As a result, he now cannot straighten two of his fingers.
Hamzah could have been jailed for up to 15 years and fined or caned on each of the two charges.
