Aiya just because he posted some photos does it mean he lives in the US? U seem to be quite naive.

Statistics(2007 i think) shows there are 40,000 Sporeans living in Australia, the same figure in the UK , and half of the numbers in US. So UK is another popular choice as well (but going down).

Most Sporeans choose Australia because i) there are more students study there and stayback to get PRs and work, and another batch (like myself) immigrated there after working in Spore a number of years. ii) Closer to Spore, 3) more laid-back, work-life balance, iv) is faster and straightforward to apply as PR then the US. Canada is too far. v) Other reasons such as re-unit with family members there or business related.

Most Sporeans I know in fact do not migrate blindly. A lot of them complain a lot but they won't take any action, or they are fear of the unknown and uncertainty if they can survive in another land.

The current generation of Sporeans are more educated and well travelled, they know what is good for them and what is not. Trust me, you can find more PRCs or indians here(Sydney) then Sporeans. Sporeans are a rare sight. In my workplace with 600+ workforce, I know there's only a handful of us (not more then 5) are from Singapore, quite a number of Asians are from HK, Malaysia, Vietnam, india. U think survive in Australia is simple and is not a venture - then try it yourself, don't just post something u don't know.

LOL i have alrady migrated and have been abroad for close to 13 years.

what redbull speaks is indeed the ground reality on the usa, i have spent an entire decade there before moving to euroland and can attest to the differences in the standards of living between the two.

It's a lot easier for those who have had educated in Australia before. If you migrate based on this route then u can safety say most of them will integrate well in the society and settle here pretty well with a good career and family life. The younger Sporean immigrants should avoid settle in Perth, Adelaide or Tasmania(too laid-back and boring for the city-state breed Sporeans) instead opt for the major cities Sydney, Melboune, Brisbane. In fact I think the younger generations should work in Spore(due to the regional hub nature) to gain more experience and would have better international exposure then in Australia before they migrate. However, in Australia they do gain something else as the workforce there have better work ethic, higher productivity, brush up better communication skills.

US & UK both are better choice for career building as they are the main drivers behind the economy. However, US is in deep depression now and UK economy is equally in bad shape. With the government pushing to save thousands of jobs in America at the expense of foreign workers holding the H1 or H1B visas, there will be plenty of foreigners ask to leave the country thus Sporeans should avoid US at all cost ,at least in the next couple of years. Canada? I'm not sure, I think it is has some similiarity with Australia.

you see, you dont understand. it seems that all you are concerned with is money, survival etc. this is the sinkie attitude

you may be accepted as an immigrant, but do you know what it means to be accepted through and through at a level similar to someone who has spent his entire life in that land?? do you know what it means, when someone tells you regardless of your accent or ethnicity, youa re american because we share common values and that these values are drawn from every corner of this earth?? do you know what it means when an descandent of a kenyan immigrant can aspire to the highest office in the land??

you can become a BRitish citizen, but at your very core are you british?
no ur not, u will still be a sinkie, a sinkie brit but sinkie none the less.

being a british/american/australian CITIZEN is one thing, being a BRITISH/AMERICAN/AUSTRALIAN is another.

Generally it not just Singaporeans but human beings are highly adaptable. The few that I see or hear struggling are the ones that have difficully with dealing with people when they are even amongs locals.

Don't worry too much for others. Let them sink or swim. After all they are not migrating to the Amazon. Its to a 1st world country.

Migration to these developed countries is highly successul and more so now that that old man, the PAP and green eyed ones are suddenly active on this front.

I too thought it was naive that a picture alone could convince you. By the way, it does appear from your posting that 13 years is still a struggle with you. Just learn to adjust the mindset.

At the end of the day, the choice of migration depends on each individual as to what is good for him. Yes. If you are young and want to have a good career, US or UK should be all right but both places suck when it comes to retirement. For retirement countries like Canada, Australia and New Zealand are better. If one wishes to work in the US or UK, the best is to get a citizenship in Canada or Australia and then go to to one of these places to work. They can then go back to one of these places to retire. The important thing is to fuck the Sinkee passport in the PAP's face, the scums responsible for making Sinkeeland one of the worst countries in the world to live in.

My thoughts

Yes. The migrants will not have the shared history of the adapted country no matter how hard we try. In fact, for those who cut the link with the country of birth tend to be in limbo.

But

1. It is important to bring up the next generation as british/american/australian - serbians and croatians decendents fighting at the recent Aussie Open are a disgrace to those ethnic communities, rather than a failure of Australians. Ultimately, the next generation will find their own identity.

2. The fact that we achieve Citizenship is a legal recognition of a person's status. Whether we are 1st class, 2nd class or 3rd class citizens depend on various factors. You have Obama which is first generation of Black American, but Jesse Jackson is probably 3rd generation. But Obama achieved 1st class citizenship status whereas Jesse will be unacceptable as a US president because of his racially-based activism.

i'm not sure exactly what is your point? America though is further ahead in its acceptance of other nationalities to its society, it doesn't mean that all Americans = white Americans. The mexicans still being treated as second-class so does the Chinese. I have asked a Brazilian why he emigrated to Australia rather then USA, he has told me people in American treat the South Americans as inferior but he doesn't feel the same in Australia thus has chosen this route. He's doing relatively well and integration with the Australian has not been a problem. FYI, one of the minister sitting in the Australian cabinet is a chinese Malaysian lady and is openly gay. I think Australia in many ways have make a good progress in the past 10 years being more open to other culture and international (thanks to the Howard gov..)

The Obama story is a overhype one. There's no rules govern that a black-African person can't be a president. Though this is the big step forward but it seems Obama being a 'black' president has often make more headlines then his true capability and competence. If not for the failure of George Bush government and millions of Americans desperately looking for a change, he would stand no chance. Also, let's put it this way Obama naturally is a charming and attractive man (and his georgeous wife), and he looks good on the camera - he would stand no chance if his skin colour is 3 times darker (those typical Kenya African man). Also, in the past decade African Americans have become mainstream and the Americans are getting use to their faces in the media ( thanks to the black American celebrities eg. Beyonce, Will Smith, Kanya West, Eddy Murphy ...the list goes on). In fact, the celebrities have helped a lot in his rally campaign thus in no time he has become a global face 'celebrity' because he's a black that breaks all the rules.

Personally I do not feel I have to give up my heritage just because I settle in another country as 'being a Singaporean' is not a shame. Singaporeans are always regarded highly along with the Hongkongers, or even the Japanese. We are in a way very 'different' to many of out South Eastern asians. This is something I would have to thank the Sg government. If someday I choose to give up my Singaporean citizenship I think our roots are still with Singapore, although physically we are living abroad and we are 'perceived' to be cultural fit to the Australian society.

So what if you are an American? Inside your heart can you say you have totally give up your roots, just like the millions of Mexicans, the Europeans, the Chinese, the indians?

I think I will do it only for the sake of withdrawing the CPF, being a Sporean is not a shame although we are ruled by a shameless gov. I've travelled to the US and the UK to work before and I don't really see there's a lot of differences with Australia (or as far as Sydney is concerned, which is the most international state in Oz). At the end of the day, whichever suits you better, just go for it, as long you can find a way to move out of Sg.
