Nigerian held in murder case

<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> POLICE have arrested a 26-year-old male Nigerian overstayer in connection with the death of a Singaporean Chinese woman whose decomposed body was found at a park near Block 201 Petir Road on Dec 29. As the body was highly decomposed and no identifying documents were found, the identity of the victim could not be immediately ascertained. Through forensic DNA matching, the identity of the dead woman, said to be 25 years, was eventually established on Tuesday. Leaving no stone unturned, Police mounted extensive islandwide operations which resulted in the arrest of the suspect late on Thursday night at a flat at Boon Lay Drive. The suspect will be charged in Saturday for murder which carries the death penalty.

It will be interesting to know if the Nigerian was a tourist or if he had been given some form of employment or residency status.

A NIGERIAN overstayer was on Saturday charged in court with the murder of the woman whose decomposed body was found in Bukit Panjang Park last month. Amanchukwu Chukwuma, 26, was led into the Subordinate Courts at about 9am in handcuffs. He wore a red shirt and sported short dreadlocks. He was expressionless when the charge was read out to him in English. Amanchukwu is accused of murdering his former lover, Ms Liu Shu Hui, 25, between Dec 22 and Dec 29, when the body was found. The crime allegedly took place in a forested part of Bukit Panjang Park near Block 201, Petir Road. Ms Liu used to work in a supermarket in Bukit Panjang, although it is unclear if she was employed just before she died. She spent nine months in jail for criminal breach of trust a few years ago. Those in the neighbourhood had spotted her hanging out with a man who looked to be of African descent. Amanchukwu, who came to Singapore in 2007, is said to have broken up with Ms Liu last year.
