SINGAPORE: A regular in the Singapore Navy has been suspended following charges of alleged acts of indecency committed in Australia.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said 21-year-old Lieutenant (LTA) Benedict Ang Yong Chuean was training at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.

The academy is a partnership between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) which provides training and education for Navy, Army and Air Force cadets from Australia and 16 other defence forces around the world.

Channel NewsAsia understands LTA Ang was a top officer cadet, having won the navy's Sword of Honour.

The sword goes to the top officer cadet in his or her training cohort.

Australian media reports said LTA Ang was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly entered the room of a female cadet in Canberra on May 6.

LTA Ang has been charged with two counts of indecency without consent.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges on Tuesday in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Magistrates Court.

Reports said he has been granted bail, on the condition that he not make contact with five other cadets at the Academy.

MINDEF's director of public affairs Colonel Kenneth Liow said LTA Ang was scheduled to appear again in court on August 9.

A Singaporean navy regular, Lieutenant Benedict Ang Yong Chuean, a trainee at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly committed two indecent acts on a female cadet.

The 21-year-old pleaded not guilty in court today.

MINDEF’s Director of Public Affairs Colonel Kenneth Liow said: “The Singapore Armed Forces take a serious view of the conduct and discipline of its servicemen and will take appropriate action where necessary. As the case is pending court proceedings, it would not be appropriate for the Ministry of Defence to comment on the case.”

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Ang’s lawyer pleaded for the court to dismiss a condition that his client report to the police every weekend since he had already handed over his passport to the authorities.

Ang, who is out on bail at the moment, will be back in court in August.

This latest incident follows the ADFA 2011 "Skype Scandal" where an 18-year-old female cadet claimed she had been filmed while having consensual sex. The footage was broadcast on Skype.

SINGAPORE - A 21-year-old Singapore navy officer charged with committing indecent acts on a fellow female cadet at the Australian Defence Force Academy will face trial later this month.

Benedict Ang Yong Chuean is accused of entering the cadet's room at the military school on May 6 and committing indecent acts on her, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.

According to The Canberra Times, Ang lay down on her bed and started rubbing her back, shoulder, neck and sides. The cadet then requested Ang to leave but he held her jaw in a "pistol grip" and attempted to kiss her.

The unnamed victim said she did not scream because she thought it would worsen the matter, and chose to go to sleep, hoping Ang would leave. She awoke later to find Ang squeezing her breast, the report said.

She then told other officer cadets of the incident, who went to speak with Ang. Ang allegedly claimed he was "high" at that time and apologised for the incident.

Ang, who holds the rank of lieutenant and was a trainee at the academy, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of acts of indecency without consent and has claimed trial. The trial is expected to start later in August at the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Supreme Court in Canberra.

The academy is a partnership between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). It provides training and education for Navy, Army and Air Force cadets from Australia and 16 other defence forces from around the world, including Singapore.

Ang is being represented by Senior Council John Harris and is receiving assistance from Singapore High Commission staff.

He has been suspended from duty and is out on bail on the condition that he not make contact with the other cadets at the academy.

Ang, who is currently studying at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, is believed to be a former Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) student and a top officer cadet, having won the Sword of Honour (Navy). The sword is awarded to the best officer cadet in a training cohort.

Naval officer Benedict Ang Yong Chuean avoided jail last Thursday despite being found guilty of forcibly kissing a female fellow cadet in an Australian military college.

The 22-year-old lieutenant - who committed the indecent act in the victim's room - was placed on an 18-month good behaviour order by a Canberra judge.

In granting Ang's request to avoid a conviction, Justice John Burns of the Australian Capital Territory Supreme Court noted that he had already suffered hardship due to the crime.

Justice Burns said the trial had "besmirched" Ang's reputation and brought shame on him, even though he had not admitted his guilt. He had been kicked out of the military academy and suspended on half pay by the Republic of Singapore Navy.

BACKGROUND STORY

ANG 'FIXATED ON VICTIM'

Lieutenant Benedict Ang Yong Chuean joined the Republic of Singapore Navy in July 2010 after basic training. He had excelled in the military and was a Sword of Honour recipient when he graduated from Officer Cadet School.

The holder of a Singapore Armed Forces scholarship, he was sent to the Australian Defence Force Academy to train and study for a degree. But his life began to unravel after he was arrested in May last year for allegedly entering a female cadet's room in the same military college three weeks earlier.

In April, an Australian court found Ang guilty of forcing the cadet to kiss him. He was cleared of a second charge of undoing the woman's bra and touching her breast while she slept.

He said during his trial that the kiss was consensual and that he had gone into the woman's room to check on her. But the prosecution told the court that Ang had "unrequited love" for the female cadet and was fixated on her.
