POPULAR Malaysian rocker Mamat was fined $1,000 on Wednesday for stealing a mobile phone and a watch. Mamat, whose real name is Mohd Ali Kamarudin, 31, was a lead singer of Malaysian band Exist in the 1990s. He pleaded guilty to stealing the $580 cellphone and a watch from Mr Noor Shazeel Sazali, 24, at his Bishan home on Nov 11 last year. The court heard that Mr Shazeel placed his phone and watch of unknown value on the table in his dining room at about 2pm that day before going to bed. When he woke up five hours later, he found them missing. He found out from his father that his cousin, Mr Muhammad Suhailmi Ruslan, 26, had been to the flat with Mohd Ali. A few days later, he called his cousin to inquire about his missing items. He was later told that Mr Suhailmi's $280 mobile phone was also missing and stolen by Mohd Ali. That theft charge was considered by the court during his sentencing. Mohd Ali, who was tracked down in his girlfriend's house subsequently, could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined.
