Singapore well short of 60,000 births needed each year
SINGAPORE: Singapore remains well short of the 60,000 births it needs each year to enable the population to replace itself naturally, figures showed.
A report released on the Department of Statistics website showed 39,935 babies were born in 2008, up marginally from the previous year.
It is the highest number of births since 2002, when there were 40,760 babies born, but remains well short of the number needed for population levels to remain stable without measures such as increased immigration.
Singapore needs a fertility rate of 2.1 babies per woman so that the population can replace itself naturally, the government has said.
The government has implemented several measures, including financial incentives, to encourage married Singaporeans to have more babies but these have failed to make a significant impact.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong last year unveiled plans worth more than S$700 million that include the extension of government—paid maternity leave.
To avert a serious population shortage, the government has set its sights on luring more immigrants to the affluent city—state.
Singapore had a population of 4.84 million in 2008, including about one million foreigners who work in the country and their families.

how r they gonna solve the problem about low birth rates, when there's insufficient effort done to curb recession, retrenchment, and soon, another super scale inflation?
consider it a blessing in disguise that the ppl are using their brains to really do proper family planning, they plan, re-plan, and they plan again, to ensure that they're doing the right thing for the kid(s) future.
if the ppl were to stupidly follow the garmen's call to make more babies, while they're incapable of ensuring schooling for the kids, to adequately finance & prepare their kids(s) for society, then in 20-25yrs time, we have a new generation of dispensable ppl, that are easily replaced by FTs.
to think that 3 or 4mths of maternity leave will be juicy enough a carrot for the women to want to deliver the goods, but factually is doing more damage to the job mkt & economy. while, the miserly financial incentives won't remedy the dent in our society.
it doesnt make sense for the employers to maintain a headcount who's away from the office for a quarter of the yr. while, it is more enticing to replace the missing staff with a cheaper FT. not to mention, there'd be some bosses who'd take the opportunity to squeeze & milk more from the other colleagues who're in office, doubling up on lost manpower.
so, at the end of the day, did the mathematician really do his math proper? or has the formula been proven flawed?
