Missing lawyer, who disappeared in 2003, found in Germany

SINGAPORE: A lawyer who went missing more than six years ago has apparently surfaced in Germany.

Tan Cheng Yew, who should be 41 now, was a prolific debater and prominent lawyer.

But he made headlines for all the wrong reasons in February 2003 when he apparently fled the country with S$5.6 million, allegedly from a client’s trust fund.

It is believed that part of the funds were used to pay off debts chalked up at casinos in Australia.

Responding to a Channel NewsAsia query, the Law Ministry has confirmed that a formal request has been made to the German authorities to have Tan Cheng Yew extradited to Singapore.

Tan’s disappearance then coincided with a string of other lawyers making off with clients’ funds, which led to the tightening of accounting procedures for law firms. — CNA/vm

This guy used to be a star debater.
I wonder what motivated him to run away with his client's money. Did something happen in his life to make him do that? How did he get hooked on gambling?

There lots of rotten lawyers. Mine borrowed money many times from me & denied them outright. She also lied that some were repaid!

How to sue her when she will fight her own case foc while I pay thru my nose and all she has to do is to drag the case longer each round until I cannot stand my legal bills.......

Crooked lawyer! She is PBM and got to retain the honorific even though Law Society found her in breach of its rules prohibiting lawyer to borrow from client! Surely she should be made to return her PBM!

This society has gone to the dogs or at least it is managed by dogs n bitches!

The chairman of the DC who was former judge even showed his prejudice and was protective towards the recalcitrant lawyer during the proceedings. Why got hope anymore for layperson to take on errant lawyers??? :oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo:

A LAWYER who allegedly went missing with $5.6 million belonging to a client more than six years ago has resurfaced in Germany.

Tan Cheng Yew, then 35, was holding the money in trust for the client - a family of five.

They had planned to use some of the money to build a new church and had asked him to release $1.5 million from a fixed deposit for that purpose when he disappeared without a trace.

The last contact anyone had with him was when he called his law firm, TanJinHwee Eunice and Lim Choo Eng in Cecil Street, on Feb 10, 2003.

He told them he was in Perth and unable to return to Singapore as he had lost his passport and cellphone.

Shortly after that, the firm cut him off as a partner, and he was sued by the family for breach of trust in the High Court here.

The family was granted an injunction to freeze the lawyer's assets as a result.

When contacted last night, the Law Ministry confirmed that a formal request had been made to the German authorities to have Tan extradited to Singapore.

Whether he turned himself in or was picked up by the authorities there remains unclear.

The Straits Times understands that Tan was in England sometime last year and tried to apply for a job there. This led to checks being made on him back in Singapore.

Tan was known as a skilled lawyer and a top debater. Friends said he had a weakness for casinos because he liked to test his skills and luck.

At the time of his disappearance, he was believed to have been heavily in debt for more than a year, owing more than $1 million to at least two Australian casinos.

When contacted last night, his older brother, Professor Tan Cheng Han, the dean of the law faculty at the National University of Singapore, declined to comment on his brother's reappearance.

Tan's disappearance occurred at a time when a slew of other lawyers had run off after filching their clients' funds.

This resulted in the tightening of accounting procedures for law firms.

Tan's case was the biggest of its kind until he was eclipsed by rogue lawyer David Rasif, who skipped town in June 2006 with $12 million of his clients' money.

hmm i wonder if the completion of the "integration resorts" has any influcence over his surrender to the SGP police? LOL!

If the authorities are aware of a string of lawyers running away with clients then obviously there is a problem with Spores system.

Why then do they continue with this silly system of trusting the lawyer with the money for a purchase of property

i think this kinda of things happens to many developed countries too..if the professionals are not able to control his sins....and let sins take over his professionalism...

ain't got anything to do with the system...but there's a serious problem with kangaroo judges in the system...i think..altruism doesn't really work in the legal system anymore....with the close monitoring of lawyers who want to stand up for singapore..read Francis Seow's book to find out more how law society have evolved into until today..

too bad one less church for the public to save some souls, SATAN wins again this round....
