Mas Selamat’s son detained for involvement in Jemaah Islamiyah
SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has placed the son of Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leader Mas Selamat Kastari under a two-year detention.
In a statement on Thursday, MHA said Masyhadi Mas Selamat, 25, was detained on 21 November 2013 on an Order of Detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA).
Masyhadi was arrested in Indonesia on October 20 last year for his involvement in terrorist organisation JI.
He was deported to Singapore on October 30.
MHA said Masyhadi was schooled in JI religious schools in Indonesia since he was 13.
He imbibed JI's radical teachings and went through paramilitary training in Indonesia when he was older.
He formally became a JI member when he took an oath of allegiance when he turned 21.
Masyhadi had conducted surveillance activities and spread radical propaganda online for the JI.
MHA also said two Singaporeans were placed on Restriction Orders under the ISA for two years from December 2013.
It said Zakaria Rosdan, 23, and Muhammad Khairul Sofri Osman, 29, were radicalised after searching for and viewing radical online videos and websites.
Zakaria had tried to contact a number of foreign militant entities online in a bid to join them and get to the conflict zones.
The ministry added that Khairul had encouraged Zakaria to do so and abetted him in his plans.
Those issued with a Restriction Order must abide by various rules, including not travelling out of Singapore without approval from the Internal Security Department Director.
MHA said it released a former ISA detainee on December 15 last year after it was assessed that he no longer posed a security threat that required preventive detention.
He was issued with a Restriction Order on the same day.
Mohd Azmi Ali, who was detained in December 2009, was a JI member who had taken refuge overseas to avoid detection by the Singapore authorities.
MHA also said the Restriction Orders of six other JI members were allowed to lapse.
They are Mohamad Anuar Margono, Ja'afar Mistooki, Mohamed Ellias Mohamed Khan, Hashim Abas, Mohamed Nazir Mohmmed Uthman and Hosnay Awi.
The ministry said they had been cooperative and responsive to rehabilitation efforts. - CNA/ms
