Litterbug jailed for false info
May 6, 2010

By Elena Chong

A CONTRACT supervisor who was caught littering twice in a month lied that two environment enforcement officers had solicited a bribe from him.

On Thursday, Sinnayah Suppiah was jailed for two months for knowingly giving false information to a senior manager of National Environment Agency, that Mr Mohamad Sobrie Mohamed Zailan and Mr Muhammad Hafiz Yazit had asked for a bribe.

He did this on July 10 last year when he went to the Environment Building at Scotts Road to appeal. The court heard that he was issued with a summons for throwing a cigarette butt into a flower pot at Pasir Ris Drive 6 on June 1 last year.

Then on June 29, he was again issued with another summons for littering. He then made the false allegation in his appeal that the two officers had solicited $100 from him on June 30 in return for not issuing him a notice to attend court for the littering offence.

The appeal was referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau. The officers denied the allegations. Sinnayah subsequently came clean and said there was no such incident.

He could have been fined up to $10,000 and/or jailed for up to one year.
