SINGAPORE : A married man who slashed his lover with a chopper and hurled her over a third-floor parapet had his five-year jail term doubled to 10 years on Monday.
Diong Tiong Ngo, a 53-year-old Malaysian and Singapore permanent resident, was sentenced to five years' jail last September for attempted culpable homicide and for slashing the woman's son when the couple had a quarrel.
The prosecution felt that Diong's sentence was too light and appealed against it on Monday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Aedit Abdullah told the Court of Appeal that the serious injuries suffered by both victims and the fact that he attacked the woman's then 14-year-old son showed Diong's "desire to inflict harm without any feelings of remorse".
Both the woman and her son were in hospital for more than two weeks due to their injuries.
DPP Aedit said that although it was not a premeditated attack, there is scope for a deterrent element in the sentence as Diong escalated the violence by using a weapon.
Diong's lawyer R S Wijaya argued that the 53-year-old is "traumatised with what had happened" and will never re-offend again. He added that Diong's family was very distraught and his wife refused to visit him in prison.
Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong said the Court of Appeal had decided to increase Diong's jail term because of the seriousness of his offences.
Diong met the woman in 2006 and the relationship soured when he lost his coffee-shop business and could not maintain her as before. The two had a quarrel over money in November 2008.
Diong grabbed a chopper, chased her down the corridor and slashed at her hand and head. When her son came to her aid, he was cut on the arm nearly to the bone. Diong then threw the woman over the parapet.
