Man leads police on 'furious' car chase

Monday, February 02, 2015

A 45-year-old man led police on a wild chase through the streets of Kwai Chung, running several red lights before crashing into a van and a taxi, injuring four other people.

None of the injuries were serious but the driver, surnamed Wong, who was also hurt, was detained for furious driving, driving without a license and driving without third-party insurance.

The high-speed chase of about one kilometer began at 11.30pm on Saturday when a motorcycle cop saw a BMW jump a red light near Container Port Road.

The police officer intercepted the car and asked the driver to pull over but instead he accelerated.

The officer gave chase and called for reinforcements.

When the car stopped on Kwai Yi Road, the officer got off his motorbike, but the driver drove off again.

During the ensuing chase the driver allegedly ran red lights on Kwai Yi Road and then Kwai Foo Road before crashing into the van. The taxi, which was following, crashed into the van.

The BMW driver and his 28-year-old passenger, surnamed Tio, were trapped in the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters.

Tio, who suffered from mouth injuries, was in a stable condition at Princess Margaret Hospital.

The taxi driver, 56, and his female passenger, 44, and the 34-year-old van driver also suffered minor injuries. STAFF REPORTER
