Man jailed for sex with underage girls

SINGAPORE: A man was jailed 24 months and fined $1,000 by a district court on Tuesday for sexual offences involving two underage girls, as well as for criminal intimidation and theft.
The 23-year-old accused -- who cannot be named to protect the identities of the two girls involved -- committed the offences in 2012, when he was a full-time National Serviceman.
The court heard that the accused became acquainted with the girls on social networking site Facebook.
Both girls were aged between 14 and 15 at the time of the offences -- a fact which the accused was aware of when he got involved with them.
He had sex with them on separate occasions at the stair landings of HDB blocks in Woodlands, Yishun and Jurong East.
His offences came to light after one of the girls accompanied him for a medical appointment at Novena.
After the appointment, the girl went home to change while the accused waited for her at the void deck of her home.
Following an argument with her mother, the girl was left locked in the flat while her mother left to pick up her younger sisters.
The girl, who lived on the second floor, then stood at a window and told the accused she could not leave the apartment.
The accused was frustrated, and told her to put on her sports shoes and jump down.
The accused also told her he would leave to meet other girls if she did not go with him then.
The girl jumped out of the window, and suffered serious spinal injuries which led to her being hospitalised.
A few weeks later, she lodged a police report saying that she had sex with him.
Separately, the accused also admitted to sending threatening text messages to the girl's father.
He also admitted to shoplifting bottles of wine from a Shop and Save outlet in Yishun.
The District Judge allowed the accused to begin serving his sentence next week so that he can settle family matters. - CNA/fa
