SINGAPORE - As an SCDF paramedic was trying to help his semi-conscious brother, a 32-year-old man hurled vulgarities at the officer and punched him.
For using abusive words on a public servant, Muhammad Faizal Jabar was fined $1,500 on Thursday (Aug 11). Two other charges of using criminal force and hurting public servants were taken into consideration by District Judge Kessler Soh.
Because he could not pay, Faizal has to serve two weeks' jail instead.
On Dec 20 last year, three SCDF officers had arrived at Faizal's Lengkok Bahru flat to find his brother lying on the bed in a semi-conscious state and foaming at the mouth, the court heard.
While aiding the man, SCDF paramedic Ou Dazhi, 30, asked Faizal questions about the background of his brother to find out the cause of the incident.
This was when Faizal got agitated and swore at him in Malay and Hokkien.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai told the Court on Thursday that this was not Faizal's first offence - he was twice fined $1,000 and $1,200 for disorderly behaviour.
In meting out his sentence, Judge Soh cautioned Faizal to rein in his emotions in future.
"You need to exercise more self-control and control your temper, it really gets you into trouble," he said.
In a statement to the media, SCDF chief medical officer Colonel Ng Yih Yng said abusing or threatening SCDF officers "would not only delay medical treatment but also put the patient at risk".
"The SCDF Emergency Medical Services provides critical emergency care to the patients in need of medical attention. In an emergency, time is of the essence," said Dr Ng.
