After seven years on the run in Malaysia, one of five men involved in the killing of polytechnic student Wong Dao Jing was found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in jail on Monday.

Toh Chun Siong, now 28, was serving his National Service when he and four other friends assaulted the student in a stairwell at Lucky Chinatown Shopping Centre in February 2003.

Toh had accused the victim of stealing his haversack and demanded repayment for an 'item' that he claimed was missing.

His friend, Leong Soon Kheong, 35, told Toh and the other three - Sean Leong Hung Chu, Teo Guan Kah, and Lim Liang Long Larry - to 'take weapon', prompting the gang to begin kicking and punching him.

Mr Wong's two friends who were with him called the ambulance after the vicious attack, but he was later declared dead in Singapore General Hospital.

A post-mortem report found injuries consistent with blunt force trauma to the head as well as defensive injuries to his arms and wrists.
