Man jailed 15 months for slashing attack
SINGAPORE: A 22-year-old odd-job worker was on Tuesday sentenced to 15 months' jail by a district court for his part in a slashing attack that left two men injured.
Elangovan Rajalingam was also jailed another three months under the Societies Act after he admitted to being a "fighter" in a gang since 2009.
Elangovan had pleaded guilty to another charge of disorderly behaviour.
The court heard that Elangovan was part of a group of nine men who had assembled at a coffee shop in Upper Boon Keng Road in October last year.
They had been standing by for a retaliatory attack against a rival gang which they were having a dispute with.
The group, some of whom were armed with knives, later moved off to Circuit Road to search for the rival gang members.
They spotted two men from the rival gang having drinks at a coffee shop.
Elangovan accosted them and asked about their gang affiliation. The two men, aged 60 and 61, kept quiet.
Elangovan then directed the group to attack the two men.
He and five others took out their knives and repeatedly slashed both men on their bodies. They later fled the scene in getaway cars.
The prosecution pointed out that Elangovan's role in the slashing attack was not minor.
He had taken a leading role by accosting the victims and giving the directions for the rest to attack.
Elangovan's lawyer told the court that his client regretted what he had done and assured the court that he had learnt his lesson. - CNA/nd
