SINGAPORE - A former logistics operations director was sentenced to the maximum five years in jail on Friday and also banned from driving for 20 years for causing the deaths of four people in a horrific crash along the Central Expressway two years ago.

Toh Cheng Yang, 36, had admitted to causing the deaths of Mr Amron Ayoub, 23, the driver of a multi-purpose vehicle; his girlfriend, Ms Song Jisoo, 24, and her parents Song Jungwoo, 55, and Kim Mee Kyung, 53, at the chevron markings before the exit to Yio Chu Kang Road along CTE on Aug 9, 2013.

He had been speeding and driving under the influence of drugs when he rammed into the four people who were standing at the back of the stationary car which had broken down due to a punctured tyre at around 3.54am.

There was a survivor, Ms Song's brother, Mr Song Seounghwan, 32, a professional golfer who had been at the side.

The Korean family was pronounced dead at the scene while Mr Amron died about an hour later in hospital.

In passing sentence, District Judge Low Wee Ping felt that Toh's culpability was one of the most serious. He said it fell within the band of cases for which the maximum sentence should be imposed.
