Man gets 22 years' jail for sexual assault of young nieces
Uncle also sentenced to 24 strokes of the cane for violating the two sisters

Two young sisters, left without caregivers after suffering one misfortune after another, were taken in by an aunt and uncle. But not long after they moved in with the childless couple, they were sexually assaulted by the man.
On Monday, the 38-year-old former mobile-phone shop owner was jailed for 22 years and ordered to be caned 24 strokes. He admitted to raping and molesting the younger girl and molesting the older girl between 2009 and last year. They were 10 and 11 when he first violated them. He cannot be identified to protect the girls' identities.
The court heard that in 1999, their mother abandoned the family and went overseas. For the next few years, they were cared for by their father and paternal grandparents. In 2004, their father was diagnosed with a serious illness and their grandparents became the primary caregivers.
In 2006, the grandmother died and they went to live with their paternal aunt and her husband - the accused in this case.
