SINGAPORE: A man who could not locate his girlfriend was on Friday fined S$4,000 for lying to the police that she was kidnapped by loansharks.
Chiang Sing Poon, 60, was convicted of providing false information to a police officer on July 5 last year.
He was in his former office in Jakarta when he made the call.
Chiang was unable to locate his girlfriend Sheng Guo Fang, 37, despite having made several calls to her on July 4 and 5 last year.
So he called the police hotline and told an officer that a group of loansharks kidnapped Ms Sheng, beat her and locked her up, and demanded a ransom of S$90,000.
He could have been jailed up to one year and fined S$5,000.
