Man fined over fatal accident
By Elena Chong
A DELIVERYMAN was fined $5,000 and banned from driving for three years on Monday for causing the death of a woman pedestrian last May.
Chua Swee Hock, 56, admitted to failing to give way to Madam Gan Chui, 61, at the pedestrian crossing while making a right turn from Bedok North Road into Bedok North Avenue 2 on May 3 last year.
A district court heard that he had stopped his lorry behind a car at the signalised cross junction. A while later, when the car moved off and made a right turn, he followed suit.
While doing so, he did a negligent act by failing to give way and knocked down Madam Gan, who had been crossing the road when the the signal was showing a 'red man'' against her.
She was taken to hospital and died at about 5am the next day. Chua could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
