SINGAPORE: Police arrested a 37-year-old suspect for stealing jewellery from a goldsmith shop and making off with watches from a pawnshop.

The suspect was caught on March 20, hours after he had allegedly stolen two watches from a pawnshop in Holland Drive.

Police believe the suspect entered the pawnshop at about 5pm and asked to view luxury watches in the display shelf.

After looking at two watches, he said he would return shortly.

When he returned at about 6pm, the staff handed to him the two watches, valued at about S$29,000.

Police said he suddenly ran out of shop with both watches and was seen fleeing in a vehicle in the direction of Queensway.

He was caught at about 8.40pm around Eu Tong Sen Street.

Police found one of the two stolen watches, valued at about $16,000.

They also seized a car with false licence plates, as well as items such as two portable hard disks and a mobile phone.

Officers later recovered a gold bar valued at about S$2,300 which is believed to have been stolen in a similar way from a goldsmith shop around Bukit Merah Central in February this year.

Based on early investigations, the suspect is believed to be involved in other cases of theft from January this year.

The suspect will be charged in court with theft on Friday afternoon.
