SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has confirmed that a male teacher who has been accused of molesting four primary school boys has been suspended.

In a statement on Monday evening, an MOE spokesperson said the Mother Tongue language teacher was interdicted from duties when the ministry was notified by the police of the case in March 2012.

The ministry said it is unable to provide further information as the case is before the courts.

But it emphasised that teachers are expected to uphold the high standards of the profession.

Court documents state that the 33-year-old man molested the boys, aged between 10 and 12, in 2011 and early 2012.

The teacher and alleged victims are from a school located in the west of Singapore.

They cannot be named due to a gag order.

The teacher, who was overseeing a uniformed group, allegedly hugged and kissed the boys and touched the private parts of one of the students.

The alleged offences are said to have been committed at various locations in the school and at MOE's Dairy Farm Adventure Centre.

The trial started on Monday and is expected to go on for the rest of the week. - CNA/ms
