An ERP gantry

SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will review the rates for the five Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries around the Singapore River in October – a month ahead of its usual quarterly review.

The move came in response to recent feedback that businesses in nearby Chinatown have seen a slump in sales since the ERP charges were introduced in July.

The LTA met with the Chinatown Business Association on Monday as part of its ongoing engagement with stakeholders affected by ERP implementation. The authority said it will adjust the ERP rates from early October if traffic conditions warrant it.

Senior Minister of State for Transport, Mrs Lim Hwee Hwa, said that the new gantries are meant to ensure that businesses benefit from smooth-flowing traffic in the long term.

She cautioned that reducing ERP charges will not be able to address any underlying weaknesses in consumer demand or economic conditions.

Mrs Lim said: "What we hope to do is to make sure that the ERP rates are pegged at the appropriate level that will ensure that patrons and users of the area will not be prevented from coming in simply because of congestion.

"There are also some issues with regard to public education. A lot of people, including the operators themselves, thought that the ERP hours are operational on Saturdays as well, which is not the case.

"That is something which LTA can look into to see how it can publicise this more widely so as to help the businesses in the area."

wasn't LTA claimed that ERP helps to improve business?
why is there a need to review it?

But..but...but...who is going to help improve our business if they lower the ERP rates  ?

There will be traffic jams, everyone rush in a choke up the roads, business cannot be conducted probably..........

Cham liow la. Better avoid Singapore River when rates are lowered .

dun think they will lower the ERP rates.. At the most, they will just maybe adjust other tax for the business owners to tide with the sales plunge..

If they were to lower, next time it will be harder for them to setup more gantry at other places..

Don't think they will raise prices since the businesses in nearby Chinatown is now heading for the dumps. At most, they will lower the ERP rates for usage during certain periods of the day.

I'm sure it'll be a give and take. Usually means they take more than they give.

<<She cautioned that reducing ERP charges will not be able to address any underlying weaknesses in consumer demand or economic conditions.>>

This statement from her is a shocker. For someone trained in Finance/Economics, this is really embarrassing.

Ask her to go to Adam Road food center n see how crowded it is during dinner time. Ditto for others which do not require motorists to pay additional inconvenient useless charges.

Has she not heard of elasticity n that lower/marginal income earners tend to be more reactive to price increases?

For a couple that used to pay $10 to eat at Maxwell or Smith Street, paying another $4 to come in n out of CBD means paying an extra 40%.

Of course to rich insensitive scums in white, what's another $4.

Latest development indicates that the Singapore River and the establishments will be relocated to Punggol River to spruce up the less developed areas.

And the Punggol River and those living nearby will be relocated to the place vacated by the above.

The PAP hopes that this will help to ease the problems faced by Sporean.

How can a monopolist, oligopolist understand elasticity in demand & supply. You pay whatevr they ask for, wether it is high or low, not happy, take alternatives. Alternatives are also owned by them, directly or indirectly, eg the bus system, the train system, the CNG's the..whatever's.

There is no need to bother for elasticity....only the consumers or users need to be elastic with their money.
