Lift robber arrested

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> POLICE arrested a robber within the same day after he robbed an elderly woman in a lift. The 51-year-old suspect, wearing a helmet, followed the elderly woman, 76, into a lift at Telok Blangah Drive and robbed her of a gold chain.

He was subsequently nabbed at Telok Blangah Crescent after a thorough search. The suspect will be charged in court on Friday for robbery, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and caning. Police have advised the public on the following crime prevention measures:

* Avoid taking the same lift with suspicious persons

* When taking the lift alone, stand beside the lift control panel and press 'Door Open' button to exit immediately if you sense anything amiss, and;

* Should you become a victim of crime, take note of the description of the culprit, e.g. his appearance, height, physical details, attire, and the direction and mode of escape

* Call the police as soon as it is safe to do so.

SINGAPORE: A suspect in a robbery case was arrested within 24 hours after the crime was committed.

The 51-year-old suspect is accused of robbing an elderly woman in a lift on August 4 at 7:20 am.

The 76-year-old woman was robbed inside the lift at Block 76 Telok Blangah Drive.

She was followed into the lift by the robber who grabbed her neck and demanded for her valuables.

The suspect made off with her gold chain when the lift door opened at the third level.

According to the Police, he was arrested at around 8pm after police conducted a search within minutes of being notified.

Police traced the suspect to a unit at Blk 1 Telok Blangah Crescent.

The suspect will be charged in court.

If convicted, he faces up to 14 years' imprisonment and shall also be liable for caning. - CNA/vm
