Easterton's Carol Brothers recovers after 'dying for 45 minutes' Medical support was withdrawn from Mrs Brothers but she is recovering .....

A 63-year-old woman who was expected to die after her heart stopped for 45 minutes, is recovering well.

Carol Brothers, from Easterton near Devizes, collapsed outside her home from a heart attack, last month.

Paramedics managed to restart her heart and she was airlifted to hospital but her family were told to expect the worst and doctors withdrew medication.

Her daughter, Maxine Dickinson, said doctors "put mum on the pathway to die" but days later "she came back to life".

Mrs Brothers was returning home from a shopping trip with her daughter when she collapsed, said her husband David.

"I saw them pull up, the next thing I hear is the daughter screaming at the top of her voice and I couldn't see Carol," he said.

"So I shot out there and she was flat out on the floor, just changing colour - a horrible colour and basically I panicked.

Mrs Brothers' daughter, with the help of a neighbour, began to administer CPR but she said as far as she was concerned "my Mum was dead on the path".

"I just went into complete shock," she said.

"First Response and the paramedics arrived and we stayed out the way because I just couldn't watch my mum - it was too upsetting.

"But they just kept going and going and going and after 45 minutes did get the heartbeat going."

Put into an induced coma, Mrs Brothers was airlifted to the Royal United Hospital in Bath and immediately transferred to the critical ward.

But three days later, with minimal brain activity detected, medical support was withdrawn.

"The doctor said she could go quite quickly - and they put mum on the pathway to die," said her daughter.

"But then she opened her eyes and came back to life and they had to try and save her."

'Miracle girl'

Despite an announcement at the church in Market Lavington that she had passed away, Mrs Brothers is now recovering at home but says she has no memory of her ordeal.

"It was a good 10 days later, coming round in hospital," she said.

"I was worrying because all the staff were saying 'how's our miracle girl?' and 'how's our wonder girl?'.

"And it was really beginning to annoy me because nobody would tell me anything."

Married for 46 years, she said it had brought her closer to her husband.

"He managed to get me a wedding anniversary card whilst I was in hospital," she said.

"He normally forgets but not this year."

The reason for Hota immediately after brain dead is because the organs will start to lose some of their abilities, although blood is still flowing and keeping them alive.

I think it is still not well research, otherwise this lawyer who wakes up from brain dead after 3 days would have at least have some of her organs malfunction.
I have not seen any research that says after brain dead, the organs will deteriorate permanently after 24 hrs.

Another issue is how exactly does sinkie doctors determine brain dead? Is their method sound and rock solid?

Third issue is what kind of incentive and disincentive does sinkie doctors face if they don't harvest the organ of someone that their prescribed method deemed as brain dead?

Finally, given that almost half of sinkieland is now foreigners, why is HOTA not extended to them? Does it mean that all foreigners will still receive organ transplant even though they are not required to contribute their organs under HOTA. This is potentially another negative aspect of being sinkies. HOTA for sinkie, organs for foreigners?

Any one still thinks that sinkieland HOTA law is perfect? Imagine that 3 specialised doctors can independently declare a person to be brain dead, and yet the person is actually alive! So how much faith should we have on medical professions in their "brain dead" diagnosis? People should really worry about being killed in Singaproe hospitals for their organs.

lianbeng says all doctors are human beings lah! time not up yet! 时辰未到!

There's no transparency at all, powerful Ft with the right connection can always arrange for something, it is not easy to find a match, I recall some dictator from SEA came here for transplant, he later died but how did he get into the priority list? Many things can be fix or arrange away from public scrutiny with our current system.

trouble is if ypu opt out, they the powers that b THREATEN that you wont be priority if you yourself need an organ transplant. what i want to know is how they make the queue?

No just powerful foreigners. Even ordinary foreigners in Singapore have it better by not being forced onto HOTA, and yet they enjoy equal access to the organs.

HOTA for sinkies, organs for foreigners.

I carry my Hota card in my wallet do you?

Carrying a HOTA card in your wallet is not the safest. Nothing can happen including lost wallet or unfound record. Safest is to leave sinkieland if you do not want your life and organs to belong to PAP. Also, besides the listed items that you are exempted from HOTA-ed, is there a possibility that other precious organs can be harvested but not listed?

I don't take kindly to threats and coercion, or emotional pleas from any person or institution.

'Priority' my lanjiao. I know what's really going on behind the scenes. Sick, needy peasants will continue queueing. Folks such as Mugabe and Than Shwe do not need to queue.

If the authorities are so desperate for organs for their beloved rich medical tourists, go get those organs from pigs.

a very dangerous statement
Then explain why doctors are so eager to declare brain dead when there is little study that shows organs will permanently deteriorate after 24 hours?

Why not impose HOTA on all foreigners in Singapore? Lets see how many of them will stay.

This is how they scare sinkies and hold power for past 50 donkey years...

Pap subject peasants to 死无全尸. I highly doubt they allow their own organs to be harvested.
I think most of today's generation don't care about maintaining a full corpse. The key issue is the possibility of being murdered for your organs, as well as the unfair treatment of sinkies vs foreigners when it comes to HOTA.

no doctors are " so eager " to declare patients brain dead. their first and sacred duty is to keep patients alive as far as possible and to salvage even the terminal...fighting to save a life is their sacred duty. what you are saying is an insult to doctors and a big slap on the face of those unsung heroes. no doctor in his right mind is " so eager" to declare brain dead....
