Taxi Driver Arrested for Abetting Loanshark Harassment
26 Sep 2010

Police have arrested a 41-year-old taxi driver who is believed to have abetted two Vietnamese loanshark runners in committing acts of loanshark harassment.

On 17 September 2010, the two Vietnamese runners were arrested in the vicinity of Serangoon North Avenue 1 for attempted loanshark harassment. Both of them have since been charged in Court on 18 September 2010 for the said offence. Follow-up investigations revealed that they were abetted by a taxi driver who had ferried them to various locations islandwide to conduct acts of loanshark harassment.

Following the lead, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted extensive enquiries and managed to trace the said taxi driver. Following an operation, the taxi driver was arrested in the vicinity of Yishun Street 21 on 23 September 2010 at about 11.00 pm. Preliminary investigations revealed that the taxi driver was believed to have been paid an amount of $150 for 5 hours to convey the two Vietnamese runners around Singapore to commit acts of loanshark harassment. Investigations against the taxi driver are still on-going.

Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of abetting in loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division HQ, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Hsu Sin Yun, commended his officers for their good investigative follow-up leading to the arrest of the suspect. He also advised taxi drivers to practice due diligence and to alert the Police if they should suspect anything amiss when ferrying passengers.
