Re: Kovan 34-yr old suspected Kovan murderer arrested

The wife just divorced him, maybe he spend a lot on the lawyer fee or made to pay a lot of maintainence to the wife?

My friend who just divorced was asked to pay over 40K to the lawyer and 20K to the wife. So 60K plus is possible.
Divorce lawyer doesn't cost so much. Is that lawyer the Susan lim of law fraternity?

Re: Kovan 34-yr old suspected Kovan murderer arrested

I am also very curious about the 'introducing business to the victim' part. But one thing do stand out on the type of business the victim is or rather was operating. A car workshop. Honesty is usually the least used word used to describe this business.

Unless the m&d was in a way part of those 'business dealings' and felt that the elder Tan was 'obligated' to help resolve his finanacial woes if not 'something will give way'.

If reckon that there were real threat made which the victim felt guilty and the demands from the m&d that came to the point that the m&d would go all the way to the house to extract money.

And when these were not met, the last straw broke as the m&d was on the verge of bankrupcty and could lose his job.

One thing ppl here must note about these silver serpents be they in the uniform group or not.

Losing the silver service job is almost something these serpents cannot take it.

I think the old man was not as simple as most people think...it need two hands to clap.

Kovan murders: Suspect 'in regular contact with older victim'

KOVAN double murder suspect Iskandar Rahmat was believed to have been in touch with one of his two victims - the late Mr Tan Boon Sin - on a regular basis since late last year.

A close relative of Mr Tan told The Straits Times yesterday that Iskandar would call the 67-year-old car workshop owner to update him about a case of theft from his safe deposit box at the Certis Cisco building which he had reported to the police last November.

"He would call Boon Sin every few weeks to update him on the theft and reassure him that the investigation was going well, and that the matter would be resolved," said the relative, who wanted to be known as Mrs Tan.

But Iskandar, a police senior staff sergeant, was not the investigation officer (IO) of the case, even though he had handled the initial report made by Mr Tan.

Kovan double murder suspect charged

By Kimberly Spykerman
POSTED: 15 Jul 2013 10:36 AM

Iskandar Rahmat, a 34-year-old police officer, was charged on Monday with the double murder at Kovan.

SINGAPORE: The suspect in the Kovan double murder was charged in court on Monday.

Veteran police officer Iskandar Rahmat, who faces two charges of murder, has been remanded for further investigations.

Reporters and photographers scrambled to catch a glimpse of the 34-year-old as he arrived at the Subordinate Courts under police escort on Monday morning.

Shortly after, Iskandar was charged with the murders of 67-year-old Tan Boon Sin and his son 42-year-old Tan Chee Heong.

According to the charge sheets, the incidents took place on July 10 at or around 3.40pm.

On Wednesday afternoon, the body of the elder Mr Tan was found in his home at Hillside Drive in Kovan while the body of his son was dragged under a car for one kilometre from the home before being dislodged outside Kovan MRT station.

Dressed in a black t-shirt with his hands cuffed behind his back, Iskandar showed no emotion as he stood in the holding area for accused persons. He will next appear in court on July 22.

For now, he will be remanded at the Central Police Division to assist in the investigations, which will include re-enactments of the crime scene.

It is not clear if his family members were in court, though a woman was seen leaving the courtroom in tears immediately after he was charged.

It is believed Iskandar fled across the Causeway on the night of the double death and was tracked down in Johor Bahru late Friday night.

A senior staff sergeant with Bedok Police Division, Iskandar had been removed from duties as an investigating officer and was facing disciplinary action for financial embarrassment prior to the Kovan murders.

Channel NewsAsia understands the proceedings were due to failure to declare his financial difficulties.

Civil servants have to make a yearly declaration that they are not "financially embarrassed" - meaning not undischarged bankrupts or facing debts.

Iskandar was deployed to perform administrative duties and barred from carrying arms.

Police said he was also in debt due to personal domestic matters.

If convicted, Iskandar faces the death penalty.

In response to media queries, police confirm that following his arrest and the decision to charge him in court, Iskandar has been formally interdicted from service.

Police say that as court proceedings against Iskandar are ongoing, the law should be allowed to take its course.

The authorities advise against speculation that could perpetuate misleading information that may cause further distress to the families involved in the case.

They also call for privacy and space for the victims' families to grieve their loss.

The funeral of the two victims of the Kovan murders will be held on Tuesday afternoon. Two hearses will go round the workplaces of both Mr Tan Boon Sin, 66 and his son Mr Tan Chee Heong, 42 before heading to the Mandai Crematorium.

The elder Mr Tan owned a car workshop in Kaki Bukit while his son worked nearby. The two men were murdered last week and their bodies found about 1km apart in the Kovan neighbourhood. The suspect, Iskandar Rahmat, 34, was charged in court on Monday.

At the last day of the wake on Tuesday, three priests arrived at about 10.30am and about 15 family members took part in funeral rites. About 40 other friends and relatives are at the wake, with more visitors expected to stream in before the hearses leave the Teochew Funeral Parlour in Ubi on Tuesday afternoon.

Family spokesman Ong Boon Kok, 49, who is the younger Mr Tan's uncle, said he was thankful for the help from the police and those who provided eyewitness accounts or other evidence to the police.

He said he was also grateful for the younger Mr Tan's son's teachers, who had assured the family that they would help the boy catch up in his studies.

Re: Brother Golden Dragon, any updates on Kovan murder?

If the suspect had financial problems and was even declared bankrupt one day after the murders, it is unlikely that there is a gay romance angle involved.
The likely motive is that he saw his bankruptcy as the final straw, which started from the time he was reassigned non investigating duties for not declaring his debts. It's likely that he would face disciplinary action and possibly termination even for not declaring debts and being declared bankrupt.
He could have gone to the old man for financial help and was rejected or perhaps they had some dealings for which he felt he was not given what he "deserved", and he felt they were responsible for causing his impending bankruptcy.
Obviously absurd logic and a totally disproportionate reaction, but these days, you get more and more people who simply want their own way and cannot take setbacks or loss of face.

Would not be surprising if the gay angle was started by the suspect himself, because if it was a crime of passion, i.e. something done on impulse and not something involving money, he would be more likely to escape the death penalty.

I think the old man was not as simple as most people think...it need two hands to clap.

Even if that's the case, that's not a reason to kill him and his son.
It's not as if they created the problem which the suspect found himself in, in the first place.

This is one possible angle...there are things that I want to say..but it is not appropriate to say it publicly...sometime we call sensitivity...politically correct & racially harmonious...you know what I mean...

Money..power..connection..throw in SEX..

I have the same thoughts, but i i doubbt if sex is involved we will know the full extent

Can someone more familiar with law answer this - if murder weapon not found and just purely blood at crime scene, meaning purely circumstantial evidences, will he be convicted?
