(l-r): Camilla, Queen Consort and King Charles III

It’s no secret that the royal family has endured a few scandals for as long as they’ve been in the public eye. However, King Charles III and Camilla Parker Bowles’ love affair is one royal family followers still discuss today.

The new king and his queen consort have been married since 2005, but their romance began years before. Charles and Camilla’s relationship crossed several boundaries and affected Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana and Camilla’s marriage to military officer Andrew Parker Bowles. For years, Diana’s fans shamed Camilla and Charles for getting together and bringing more attention to the monarchy.

With all the chaos surrounding their relationship, it’s not surprising that fans are still dissecting Charles and Camilla’s union today. Many have wondered why Queen Elizabeth II’s son didn’t marry Camilla before Diana.

So, why didn’t Prince Charles marry Camilla in the first place?

Charles spent most of his youth pursuing the bride who would help him take over his mother’s reign. According to TikToker and royal family fan @matta_of_fact, Charles dated multiple women searching for the perfect princess. The prince and his family reportedly had several expectations of the future Princess of Wales, including her being “young, a virgin, comfortable in the spotlight, and comfortable stepping a few steps behind Charles for the rest of her life.”

Charles met several women who fit his and the royal family’s criteria — his second cousin, Amanda Knatchbull, and Scottish heiress Anna Wallace. He reportedly proposed to both women, but they weren’t ready for the demands of being a royal’s wife. However, when he and Camilla connected, the prince felt he had met his match due to their shared interests. Charles also felt comfortable around Camilla because she treated him like a regular person rather than the heir to the throne.

Charles’ family disapproved of the union despite believing Camilla was the woman for him. Queen Elizabeth II and co. took issue with Camilla dating Andrew and other members of the British society. So, they decided Camilla wasn’t an appropriate fit for Charles’ wife but encouraged him to keep her around, but only as a mistress.

When did Charles and Camilla meet?

Although Camilla wasn’t a hit with the royal family, she stole Charles’ heart the moment they met, per Vanity Fair. They met in 1970 at a polo match in Windsor Park and reportedly bonded over her great-grandmother’s affair with his great-great-grandfather. Following their initial conversation, they continued spending time together and found they enjoyed the same hobbies, activities, and England’s countryside.

Around the time of Camilla and Charles’ romance, the royal family sent Charles to serve in the British Navy. After serving his country, he discovered that Camilla married Andrew in July 1973. Charles eventually moved on and married Diana in 1981. Charles and Diana stayed married for over a decade and welcomed two sons — Prince William and Harry.

During Camilla’s and Charles’ respective marriages, she and Charles remained friends. Their friendship was so close that Camilla reportedly made Charles the godfather of one of her children. But, the rumors surrounding the true nature of their relationship started when private phone calls between them from 1989 surfaced.

Diana also explained in her biography, Diana: Her True Story — In Her Own Words, how Camilla allegedly gifted Charles a bracelet with the charms “F and G,” which stood for their pet names to each other, Fred and Gladys.

After years of affair rumors, Charles admitted to starting his romantic relationship with Camilla in 1986. Nonetheless, he and Diana didn’t divorce until 1996, a decade after the affair began. Camilla and Andrew divorced in 1995, and she started seeing Charles again privately. When Diana died from a car crash in 1997, they kept the relationship even hush-hush out of respect for her.

In 2005, Charles married Camilla, and they’ve been together ever since.

i guess the royal family put sufficient weight on a woman's virginity during those days. or maiybe because charles was heir to the throne and had to marry a virgin so that the royal blood is not tainted.
however I wonder if meghan, harry's american wife was a virgin when he married him?

What is the difference between a queen and a queen consort? Here's what we know about Camilla's new role
www.rnz.co.nz
By Sarah Motherwell for the ABC*

Camilla will be formally known as Queen Consort now that her husband Charles is King.

For years it was believed she would become princess consort - which would have been a first in British history. But in February 2022 the late Queen Elizabeth II gave her backing for her son's wife to adopt the queen consort title.

Here's what the title means for the royal family.

What does queen consort mean?

A queen consort is the female partner, spouse or companion to the King.

The consort is not a formal role, and is symbolic of the support the person gives the monarch.

It is different to the queen regnant, who is the ruler in their own right, like Queen Elizabeth II.

Before her, the previous queen regnant was Queen Victoria, whose husband Prince Albert was prince consort.

Historically, male spouses to the queen regnant have taken on the title prince consort rather than king consort.

However, the proposed title of princess consort for Camilla was "a bit of a compromise", royal family historian Dr Cindy McCreery explains.

"Princess consort was a compromise that arose because of the sense of grief and anger, notably at the death of Princess Diana," she told the ABC.

"But also at the resentment in many quarters towards Camilla for what many people felt was the improper relationship that Charles and Camilla had during the time that Charles was still married to Diana."

Charles had a long-running intimate relationship with Camilla before and during his marriage to Diana Spencer in 1981.

At the time, Camilla was also married to army officer Andrew Parker Bowles.

Charles and Diana divorced in 1996, and Diana retained the title Princess of Wales.
A year later, Diana died in a car crash in Paris, aged 36.

Camilla and Charles married in a civil ceremony at Guildhall in Windsor on April 9, 2005.

The Queen, as head of the Anglican Church, did not attend the ceremony, but did host and attend the reception at Windsor Castle afterwards.

"We saw a situation arise where, [as] a kind of compromise position, Queen Elizabeth suggested that Camilla would be not queen but princess," Dr McCreery said.

"That's a very unusual situation in the normal course of events - the wife of a king in Britain is known as queen consort."

In February 2022, the Queen said in a special Platinum Jubilee message that it was now her "sincere wish" that Camilla be known as queen consort when Charles came to the throne.

Why was Prince Philip not called king consort?

Prince Philip was the longest-serving British consort in history and held the title prince consort for 69 years.

Dr McCreery said it was tradition for the male spouse of a reigning queen to be known as prince consort to "bolster the authority of the woman".

Britain had one dual monarchy in the late 17th century when King William and Queen Mary ruled together after the abdication of her father, King James II.

"The British parliament asked William of Orange, who was related to the British dynasty but only remotely, and his wife Mary, who was James's eldest Protestant daughter, to become the new monarchs," Dr McCreery said.

"It was important Mary was known and recognised as queen because she was the heir.

"This is quite an important but really unusual event where it's really important for the sake of the stability of the crown that you had a king and queen ruling together.

"But other than that, when there's been a queen ruling, it's really important that her husband is not confused in people's minds as somehow a king, and therefore he takes a title of prince consort."

Will we be calling Camilla queen or queen consort?

Dr McCreery says while queen consort is the formal title, it is not used in general practice.

"For example with Queen Elizabeth II's parents, her father was King George VI, her mother was queen consort," she said.

"But in practice, she was known was Queen Elizabeth (her name was also Elizabeth).

"It might be the formal term, but we don't in practice say the king and queen consort. We say king and queen."

Prince Charles romance before Diana connects him to South America - ‘First real love'

THE details and tribulations of Prince Charles' love life have been well documented throughout the years.

By JOHN VARGA

Invariably the focus has always been on the prominent roles two particular women played in his romantic liaisons - Camilla Parker Bowles and Princess Diana. Yet, the first love affair that Prince Charles was involved in centred around an entirely different woman, whose identity has remained relatively obscure to this day. The woman in question was the daughter of the Chilean ambassador to the court of St James.

Charles met her when he started his undergraduate course at Trinity College Cambridge.

Lucia Santa Cruz was at the time employed as a research assistant by the Master of Trinity College, Lord 'Rab' Butler.

She was a highly gifted linguist who spoke four languages and already had degrees from Kings College, London, and St. Antony’s College, Oxford.

Charles and Lucia met at a dinner party organised by Lord Butler in 1969 and by all accounts it was love at first sight.

Lady Elizabeth Anson, a cousin of Charles as well as a friend of Luicia's, observed: "She was the first real love of his life”.

Not many photographs exist of the couple together, but in 1971 they were snapped together in London while travelling in a car.

The Daily Telegraph also reported that the Prince of Wales took his first love to meet the Royal Family at Balmoral.

Even though the affair petered out, Lucia would still go on to play a fateful role in the future life of Prince Charles.

In 1971, she moved into a flat in Belgravia, London and quickly got to know her neighbours, one of whom was the debutante Camilla Shand.

Lucia lost no time in introducing Charles to her new friend.

According to Jonathan Dimbleby in his biography of the Prince of Wales, Charles "lost his heart to her almost at once."

Lucia would eventually go to become friends with Diana, but also remained close to both Charles and Camilla.

She married the diplomat Paolo Tarso Flecha de Lima, who later became Brazilian Ambassador to the UK and had a successful career as a historian and academic.

Diana, Princess of Wales

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana,_Princess_of_Wales

Diana was born into the British Spencer family, different branches of which hold the titles of Duke of Marlborough, Earl Spencer, Earl of Sunderland, and Baron Churchill.[491][492] The Spencers claimed descent from a cadet branch of the powerful medieval Despenser family, but its validity is questioned.[493] Her great-grandmother was Margaret Baring, a member of the German-British Baring family of bankers and the daughter of Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke.[494][495] Diana's distant noble ancestors included the first Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.[496] Diana and Charles were distantly related, as they were both descended from the House of Tudor through Henry VII of England.[497] She was also descended from the House of Stuart through Charles II of England by Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, and Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton, and his brother James II of England by Henrietta FitzJames.[21][498] Other noble ancestors include Margaret Kerdeston, granddaughter of Michael de la Pole, 2nd Earl of Suffolk; Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, an English nobleman and a favourite of Elizabeth I of England; and Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, a descendant of Edward III of England through his son Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence.[499][500][501]
