JI member held; 2 released
<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> A 41-YEAR-OLD Singaporean has been arrested for involvement in terror activities. Mohd Azmi bin Ali, aged 41, was issued with a detention order under the Internal Security Act (ISA) from Dec 15. A statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday said Azmi is a long-time member of Jemaah Islamiah. He joined the group in 1989 when it was known as Darul Islam. Sometime in 1997, he visited the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) camp in Mindanao where he took an oath of allegiance with then-MILF chairman Hashim Selamat. MHA said that at the camp, he learnt to handle firearms and attended a bombmaking demonstration. Azmi also donated funds to the MILF cause, and was fully aware that the money would be used to purchase ammunition, among other things. Azmi fled Singapore in Dec 2001 in the wake of security operations against the JI. He remained in hiding overseas and was eventually arrested with the cooperation of regional authorities.
In the same press statement, MHA also announced the release of two Singaporean JI members, Mohamed Nazir bin Mohammed Uthman and Hashim bin Abas, on Jan 6. Although no longer in detention, they remain on Restriction Orders (ROs) which curb their activities and movements. Both were first arrested in Dec 2001 for their involvement in JI's plans to mount terrorist attacks against several targets in Singapore. The two have been cooperative in investigations and shown significant progress in their rehabilitation, said MHA. Three other men who had been on Restriction Orders since 2004 are now totally free men. They are Hamim bin Jaafar, Yusri bin Mohamed Yusof and Abdul Ghani bin Omar. They were slapped with ROs on 10 Jan 2004. As the three had been cooperative in investigations and had responded to rehabilitation, they were assessed to no longer require supervision under an RO regime, said MHA.
