Jailed for 'hammering' brother

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A MAN, jailed for a month on Friday for hitting his younger brother with a wooden hammer last September, had spent more than three months in remand. As the sentence was backdated to Dec 8, Chua Lye Heng, 45, was freed on his return to prison from court. Chua got angry when his 33-year-old brother asked him to lower the volume of the music he was playing at about midnight on Sept 14. The younger son suffered tenderness and swelling on his thigh from the blow from the hammer. Chua, who is single and unemployed, was arrested and remanded in the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) till Sept 30. As his family could not put up the $8,000 bail, he was transferred to Changi prison. Asking the court for leniency for Chua on Friday, his lawyer Jackson Eng said: 'My client has spent at least three months in remand for an unpremeditated attack that caused relatively light injuries.'
